Hamalian Places Ninth at Holy Cross Decathlon

West Bridgewater, Mass., sophomore posts program-record point total, logs sixth personal-bests over two days

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 23, 2016) – Stonehill College sophomore Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) notched six new personal-bests, including a program-record point total to post a ninth place finish at the Holy Cross Decathlon, hosted by College of the Holy Cross, at Hart Track this weekend.

Hamalian compiled a program-record 5,889 points over the two day event to place ninth out of 20 entries, good for second among the six non-Division I athletes competing at the event. He moved up three spots from his 12th place position after day one of the decathlon with 2,768 points on day two after totaling 3,121 points through the first five events. His personal-best point total surpasses the previous program mark of 5,681 points set by Alexander Willgoos at the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

Hamalian's best finish of the decathlon was a sixth place showing in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 20-feet, 11.25-inches, placing third among non-Division I athletes. He finished the two days with six personal-bests overall, including three on day one. Hamalian opened the meet with a personal-best time of 11.68-seconds in the 100-meter dash, placing ninth in the event. After his PR in the long jump, he also registered a personal-best height of 5-feet, 10.5-inches in the high jump to place seventh – second among non-Division I entries.

Hamalian added a personal-best distance of 145-feet, 1-inch in the javelin throw for an 11th place finish on day two. He also clocked a personal-record time of 4:48.81 in the 1500-meter run for a seventh place finish to cap the decathlon. Hamalian also turned in a strong eighth place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.55-seconds and a seventh place finish in the pole vault by clearing a height of 12-feet, 1.5-inches.

Stonehill closes out the weekend at the Holy Cross Invitational on Sunday at 11 a.m. Stonehill's annual Skyhawk Invitational is up next weekend on Saturday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m.
