Men's Track & Field Wins Two Events at UMass Lowell Invitational

Vercollone and Hamalian pace Skyhawks in outdoor opener

LOWELL, Mass. (March 26, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program opened its outdoor season by posting two event wins at the UMass Lowell Invitational at Cushing Field Complex today.

Freshman Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) won the 800-meter run in 1:58.93. Junior Steven Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished sixth in 2:02.10, while freshman Connor Wolff (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody) took tenth in 2:07.41.

Sophomore Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) finished first in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.89-seconds. He also cleared 11-feet, 5.75-inches in the pole vault to place sixth.

Hamalian ran the anchor leg for Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team posted a time of 3:28.99-seconds for a second place finish. Also running the event for the Skyhawks were sophomores Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Day School), Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) and Ruddy Severino (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen). Severino also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49-seconds.

Junior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) led three Stonehill runners in the top five of the 400-meter dash with his third place finish in 50.64-seconds. Hubbell took fourth in 52.23-seconds, while freshman Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) rounded out the top five in 53.14.

Freshman Alex Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) led four Stonehill runners in the top ten of the 3000-meter run with his fifth place finish in 8:54.38. Junior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) finished seventh in 8:58.97, while freshman Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) placed eighth in 8:59.81. Freshman Chris Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) rounded out the top ten in 9:00.59.

Sophomore Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) took second in the hammer throw with a distance of 162-feet even. He also placed sixth in the discus throw with a distance of 120-feet, 10-inches. Senior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) placed third in the shot put with a distance of 47-feet, 5.00-inches. Freshman Darren Shi was fifth at 43-00.25. He was also fourth in the hammer throw with a throw of 148-07. 

Other Stonehill Results Included: 

Sophomore Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) cleared 6-feet, 0.75-inches in the high jump to place second in the event. 

Sophomore Jonathan Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed second in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 11.75-inches. 

Sophomore Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.53-seconds. 

Sophomore Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) finished eighth in the 200-meter dash in 24.89-seconds. He was also third in the pole vault by clearing 12-feet, 11.50-inches.

Freshman David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) finished tenth in the one mile run, establishing an outdoor school-record in the first time the event has been run outdoors after formally running the 1500-meters.
Stonehill is back in action next weekend when it competes at the 51st annual Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary University, in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Friday and Saturday.
