Men’s Track & Field Competes at Joe Donahue Invitational

Griffin tenth in weight throw, Naval ninth in triple jump to lead Skyhawks 

BOSTON, Mass. (January 22, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program competed against primarily NCAA Division I competition at the Joe Donahue Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center tonight.

Senior thrower Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) and sophomore jumper Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) led the way for Stonehill in their field events. Griffin posted a tenth place finish out of 23 competitors in the shot put with a distance of 47-feet, 7.75-inches, while Naval placed ninth out of 15 entries in the triple jump with his distance of 43-feet, 8.00-inches.

Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team posted an eighth place finish in 3:27.57. Junior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) ran the lead leg, followed by sophomore Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) and freshman David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) before freshman Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) ran the anchor leg.

Vercollone and Lockhart also led five Stonehill runners in the 1000-meter run. Vercollone finished in 14th place finish out of 38 runners overall with his time of 2:34.33, while Lockhart was 18th in 2:35.58. Junior Stephen Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished 24th in 2:37.30.

Burleigh posted a 19th place finish out of 38 competitors in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:58.23, while Dimmick finished 25th in 1:58.96.

Senior Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) led four Stonehill entries in the seeded one mile run with his tenth place finish in 4:20.34. Junior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) took 14th out of 26 overall in 4:23.51.

Sophomore Josh Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) took 11th place in the 400-meter dash out of 33 entries with a time of 51.59-seconds. He was also 21st in the long jump after clearing a distance of 20-feet, 0.50-inches.

Sophomore Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) placed 14th out of 23 entries in the weight throw with his distance of 46-feet, 7.25-inches. 

Junior Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed 18th out of 30 entries in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:07.73.

Freshman Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) finished 18th out of 59 entries in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.12-seconds. He also placed 24th out of 62 competitors in the 60-meter dash in 7.27-seconds. 

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when the majority of the team competes at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track & Tennis Center, at 11 a.m., while the Skyhawks distance runners will compete at the Tufts University Stampede on Saturday as well.
