Baldasare wins 400m and leads 4x400 relay, while Griffin wins shot put
BOSTON, Mass. (December 5, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program opened its 2015-16 indoor season with four event wins at the Fourth Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Saturday.
Junior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) won the 400-meter dash and led three Stonehill runners in the top 11 with a time of 51.05-seconds. Sophomore Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Day School) finished ninth in the field of 49 with a time of 52.40-seconds, while classmate Josh Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) took 11th in 53.11.
Baldasare also led Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay to first place with a time of 3:28.17. Baldasare ran the lead leg, followed by Hubbell, freshman Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) and Ahern.
Hubbell also placed third in the long jump as he cleared a distance of 20-feet, 10.50-inches, while Madsen finished sixth out of 29 runners in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:25.00 to win his heat.
Senior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) led Stonehill's field events with his first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 47-feet, 7.25-inches. Sophomore Jon Irving (Wareham, Massachusetts/Wareham) placed sixth with a throw of 42-11.50.
Sophomore Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) took third in the weight throw with a distance of 47-feet, 9.25-inches, while Griffin placed 12th with his throw of 39-09.75.
Freshman Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) led a Stonehill sweep of the top three positions in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.85. Sophomore Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) was second in 1:59.78, while junior Steven Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished third in 1:59.86.

Sophomore Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 45-feet, 3.00-inches, while also finishing 13th in the long jump at 19-09.50.
Junior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) finished second in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:33.13, which was better than the previous meet record.
John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) led a fleet of five Stonehill freshmen in the top nine out of seven Skyhawks in the top 12 overall in the 3000-meter run with his third place finish in 8:58.63. Classmate Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) was fourth in 8:59.70, while Alex Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) took seventh in 9:11.35 and Chris Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) was eighth in 9:16.49. Steve Scala (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) capped the run of Stonehill freshmen in ninth with a time of 9:17.05.
Sophomore Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) placed third in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 11.25-inches.
Freshman David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) took third in the one mile run in his collegiate debut, posting a time of 4:31.01, while classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) placed fourth in 4:33.45.
Sophomore Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.98-seconds after qualifying for the finals seventh in 9.08. He was also 17th in the high jump by clearing a height of 5-feet, 10.75-inches.
Stonehill is back in action next Saturday for one more meet before the end of the semester when it competes at the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, back at the Reggie Lewis Center at 3 p.m.
