Stonehill Opens Outdoor Season at Yellow Jacket Invitational

Grubel and Griffin lead Skyhawks on the track and in throwing events 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 4, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program finally got its outdoor season started and placed 11th at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International College, today.

Stonehill compiled 21 points on the afternoon for its 11th place finish. The University of Vermont won the team event with 138 points, with Northeastern University second with 135.5 points and host American International third with 81 points. The Skyhawks were fifth among Northeast-10 Conference programs at the meet in its first outdoor meet of the season.

Junior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) placed fifth out of 36 throwers in the shot put with a distance of 48-feet, 4-inches. Sophomore Carmen Cilfone (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth) placed 16th with a throw of 42-04.75, while freshman John Irving (Wareham, Massachusetts/Wareham) was 17th at 42-02.00.

Griffin also took ninth in the hammer throw with a distance of 140-feet, 10-inches. Junior Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) placed 12th out of the 31 entries with a throw of 136-09.

Senior All-American Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) helped account for the bulk of Stonehill's points, leading with a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.38-seconds, finishing fourth in his heat. Freshman Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Day School) placed 18th out of 35 entries in the event with a time of 23.27-seconds.

Grubel also led Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay that finished third in 3:29.83. Senior Robert Smith (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial), freshman Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) and senior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Massachusetts/BC High) also ran legs for the Skyhawks. Grubel, Ahern, Hubbell and Smith all ran as part of Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay that placed fifth in 44.54-seconds.


Junior Mason Griffin led the Skyhawks throwers with a pair of top ten finishes.

Hubbell was also 15th out of 34 entries in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 4-inches. Freshman Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) was 22nd with a leap of 18-11.25. Naval was also seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 40-feet, 4-inches. Staley finished 21st in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.31-seconds. 

Other Stonehill results include: 

Sophomore Adam Rego (Rumford, Rhode Island/La Salle Academy) finished 12th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:44.73. Freshman Ken Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) placed 21st out of the 31 entries in 16:22.62. 

Freshman Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) placed 14th out of 47 entries in the 800-meter run with his time of 2:04.27, while sophomore Steven Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished 18th in 2:04.76. 

Junior Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) finished 15th out of 59 runners in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:12.69. Senior Michael Gendron (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) ran 26th in 4:16.59, while freshman Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) placed 36th in 4:23.54 and sophomore Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) was 39th in 4:25.52. Gendron was also 25th in the 5000-meter run in 16:48.05. 

Freshman Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 8-inches, in an event in which the winning height was 6-feet even under blustery conditions. Hamalian also finished 17th in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.19-seconds, and 30th in the 200-meter dash in 24.33-seconds. 

Freshman Jon Rockwood (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) placed 20th in the javelin throw with a distance of 135-feet, 6-inches. 

Freshman Daniel Stone (Potsdam, New York/Potsdam) placed 21st in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.86-seconds. He was also 25th in the 200-meter dash in 23.52-seconds. 

Stonehill is back in action next weekend when its distance runners will compete at the Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College, on Friday night, while the remainder of the team will be at the Minuteman Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts, on Saturday at 10 a.m.
