Skyhawks distance medley relay posts No. 3 time in the country to improve NCAA provisional qualifying mark
BOSTON, Mass. (February 27, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked third in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, turned in a pair of All-New England performances on day one of the 2015 New England Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track & Tennis Center this evening.
Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay team highlighted the night for the Skyhawks with its third place finish for All-New England honors for the second straight year and third time over the last four. The Skyhawks finished in 9:50.89, just 0.56-seconds shy of the school record, to improve its NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the upcoming NCAA DivisionII Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, by posting the No. 3-ranked time in Division II this winter to date. Stonehill finished third behind Amherst College (9:48.61) and Northeastern University (9:48.82) tonight and first among the five Northeast-10 entries out of 19 relay teams overall.
Junior All-American Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) ran the opening 1200-meter leg in 2:59.2, before senior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) finished the 400-meter leg in 49.2-seconds, senior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, New York/Archbishop Molloy) completed the 800-meter leg in 1:53.3, and then senior All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Massachusetts/St. John's of Shrewsbury) finished the mile anchor leg in 4:08.8. Kirkpatrick, Cooney and Zawalich have all earned their All-America plaudits as part of past DMRs, while Cooney and Zawalich earn All-New England honors in the event for the second straight year after the team placed fourth here last winter and unofficially ran NCAA provisional qualifying times on their legs tonight.
Senior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Connecticut/Southington) earned All-New England honors for the second straight year in the 5000-meter run with his second-straight eighth place finish in the field of 28 qualifiers in 14:50.31. Sophomore Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) placed 17th in 15:12.84, while senior Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) finished 22nd in 15:22.55.

Stonehill sits in ninth place in the team standings after the first day of the New England Championships with the seven points it earned in the DMR and 5000m tonight. The Skyhawks are second among NE-10 programs, while Northeastern leads the team standings with 38 points and Southern Connecticut State University is second with 20.
Other Stonehill results from day one include:
Freshman Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) placed 13th out of 21 qualifiers in the long jump with a distance of 21-feet, 3.50-inches. Classmate Josh Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) finished 18th with a leap of 20-04.50.
Junior Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) placed 15th in the weight throw with a distance of 50-feet, 9.25-inches. Senior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) placed 22nd with a throw of 46-10.00.
Freshmen Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) and Ruddy Severino (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) both missed out on qualifying for tomorrow's final in the 500-meter dash. Dimmick finished 20th in today's preliminary heats with a time of 1:06.42, while Severino placed 25th in the field of 30 in 1:07.33.
Sophomore Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) placed 20th out of 31 participants in the 800-meter run, missing out on tomorrow's final with a time of 1:55.09.
Stonehill is right back in action at Boston University tomorrow for day two of the New England Indoor Championships at the BU Track & Tennis Center starting at 10:30 a.m.
