Dixon & Cormier Lead Stonehill at 49th Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 4, 2014) – Senior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Allendale, Mich., next month to highlight Stonehill College's efforts at the 49th Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary University, at Zable Stadium today.

Dixon qualified second out of 38 entries for tomorrow's final in the 110-meter high hurdles with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.47-seconds – the 8th-fastest time in Division II to date.

Junior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed ninth in the championship section of the hammer throw with a distance of 152-feet, 9-inches. He also placed fourth in the unseeded flight for the shot put with a throw of 44-feet, 2.75-inches. Sophomore Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) finished eighth in the shot put at 42-feet even.

Cormier's ninth place finish in the hammer throw earned Stonehill two points and the Skyhawks sit in 33rd place in the team standings after day one. Virginia Tech leads the way with 60 points, followed by Iona College with 41. The Skyhawks are third among Division II programs at the meet.

Senior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished 12th out of 38 entries in the 10,000-meter run as he crossed the finish line in 31:47.93, while junior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) placed 14th in 31:56.59. Freshman Joe Santo (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) finished 28th in 33:18.10.

Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) placed 13th in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 11.18-seconds. He also finished 21st out of 82 entries in the 200-meter dash in 22.44-seconds.

Junior All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) placed 22nd out of 65 entries in the seeded 1500-meter run with a time of 3:55.01. Sophomore Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finished 13th in the unseeded 1500-meter with a time of 4:03.77, while senior All-American Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) placed 17th in 4:04.27

Freshman All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) finished 25th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.96-seconds. Junior Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) finished 35th in 50.89-seconds, while senior Ryan Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) took 66th in 52.95. Smith also finished 52nd in the 200-meter dash in 23.21-seconds.

Junior Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and freshman Daniel Nolan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finished 31st and 32nd respectively in the 3000-meter run. Gordon established a school record for the event as he crossed the finish line in 9:15.65, while Nolan finished in 9:15.95. Freshman Adam Rego (Rumford, R.I./La Salle Academy) took 35th in 9:28.58.

Other Stonehill highlights include: 

Junior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) finished tied for 11th in the championship flight of the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 4.25-inches. 

Senior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) placed 16th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.53-seconds. 

Senior Nathaniel Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) finished 23th out of 41 entries in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.60. Junior Seamus McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) placed 33rd in 9:52.43. 

Junior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) finished 24th in the seeded 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.68. Freshman Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) placed 28th in the unseeded 800 with a time of 1:57.83. 

Senior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed 13th in the unseeded section for the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 10.50-inches. He also finished 26th in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 3-inches and 36th in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.88-seconds. 

Senior Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) finished 41st in the seeded 5000-meter run with a time of 15:07.05. Classmate Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) placed 53rd in 15:35.92. 

The 49th Annual Colonial Relays concludes on Saturday. Stonehill, which will host its annual home Skyhawk Invitational on Friday, April 25, is also the host of the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
