Smith Leads Stonehill at BSU Bears Invitational

Skyhawks post eight top five finishes on the day 

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (March 22, 2014) – Just a week after competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Stonehill College men's track and field team opened its outdoor schedule at the BSU Bears Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University, at Edward C. Swenson Athletic Field Complex today.

Junior Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) won the 400-meter dash, leading a list of seven Stonehill entries in the event, including four that finished in the top ten out of 45 entries overall. Smith finished in 50.96-seconds for his first place finish, while senior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished third in 51.15. Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) placed seventh in 52.72-seconds and then freshman Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) rounded out the top ten in 53.19.

Senior Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and Grubel ran sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 46 competitors in the 100-meter dash. Harris finished in 12.08-seconds for sixth place, while Grubel clocked in at 12.17 for seventh.

Junior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) and sophomore Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) placed second and third, respectively, out of 36 entries in the shot put. Cormier posted a distance of 45-feet, 8.50-inches for his second place finish, while Griffin had a throw of 44-10.25. Freshman Carmen Cilfone (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) placed ninth at 41-3.00.

Sophomore Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) placed second out of 37 competitors in the discus throw with a distance of 143-feet, four-inches. Cilfone was again ninth, with a throw of 110-03.

Stonehill also dominated the 1500-meter run with senior Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) leading eight Skyhawks in the field, all of which finished in the top 14 out of 42 overall entries, with a third place finish in 4:07.68. Senior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) placed fifth in 4:14.67, while freshman Tyler Henseler (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) finished sixth in 4:15.40. Junior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) and senior Nate Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) rounded out five Skyhawks in the top five with ninth and tenth place finishes. Wilcox posted a time of 4:17.55, while Webber finished in 4:18.19.

Senior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.20-seconds. He was also sixth in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 1.50-inches and 26th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.77-seconds.

Stonehill will have next weekend off before returning to action at the 49th Annual Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary University in Williamsburg, Va., April 4-5. Stonehill, which will host its annual home Skyhawk Invitational on Friday, April 25, is also the host of the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
