Staley leads four first place efforts with NCAA provisional mark
MEDFORD, Mass. (February 15, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program, ranked second in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional computer rankings, posted four first place performances to highlight its efforts at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge at Gantcher Athletic Center today.
Junior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) won the high jump for the first time this season, and improved his provisional qualification position for the upcoming NCAA Division II Championships with a season-best height of 6-feet, 10.75-inches, which is currently tied for ninth nationally. Senior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed eighth by clearing 6-0.00.
Senior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) won the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.15-seconds after qualifying second overall in the field of 33 with a time of 8.27-seconds.
Junior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) won the 800-meter run in 1:56.09, topping a field of 30 entries. Sophomore Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) took first place in the 1000-meter run by clocking a time of 2:32.40, besting a field of 27 runners. Freshman Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and senior Christopher Dooley (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished 16th and 17th, respectively, with times of 2:39.22 and 2:39.30.
Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.79-seconds, just 0.03 off the winning pace by Tyler Singer-Clark from MIT (22.76). Freshman Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) took fourth in 22.86-seconds, while junior Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn) was fifth in 22.86.

Grubel also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with his time of 7.18-seconds after qualifying sixth for the final out of 44 entries in 7.22-seconds. Smith and senior Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) placed 15th and 16th, respectively, in the preliminary heats with identical times of 7.29-seconds.
Smith also placed 22nd in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 11.75-inches.
Sophomore Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) placed seventh in a field of 42 throwers for the shot put with a distance of 46-feet, 5.25-inches. Junior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) took tenth with a throw of 45-feet, 0.25-inches, while freshman Carmen Cilfone (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and sophomore Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) finished 13th and 14th respectively. Cilfone had a distance of 43-07.25, while Hastings followed right behind at 43-02.50.

Other Highlights from Saturday's action include:
Senior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished sixth out of 40 runners in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:23.63.
Freshman Tyler Henseler (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) finished seventh out of 46 competitors in the 3000-meter run with his time of 8:41.93, while sophomore Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) ran tenth in 8:46.05.
Freshman Joe Santo (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) placed seventh in the 5000-meter run with his time of 15:25.99. Senior Nate Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) finished 16th in 16:03.31 in the field of 40 runners, while junior Michael Gendron (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) was 22nd in 16:28.51.
Sophomore Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Mass./St. John's Prep) finished 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 46-feet, 10.25-inches.
Senior All-American Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) placed 12th out of 36 runners in the one mile run with a time of 4:27.86.
Stonehill returns to action next Saturday night when it defends its Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championship at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass., at 4 p.m.
