Stonehill Opens at UMass Boston Invitational

Cormier leads three event winners with a pair of strong events 

BOSTON, Mass. (December 7, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program opened its indoor season by competing at the University of Massachusetts Boston Invitational, hosted by UMass Boston at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center today.

Junior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) led a list of three event winners and posted two of Stonehill's six top two showings on Saturday. He won the shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 7.25-inches, while sophomore Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) finished fourth with a distance of 44-07.00. Sophomore Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) placed fifth with a distance of 44-04.00.

Cormier also finished second in the weight throw with his distance of 51-feet, 11.25-inches, tops among the collegiate throwers competing. Sophomore Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Mass./St. John's Prep) finished fourth at 47-04.25.

Senior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) won the 500-meter dash with his time of 1:06.80. Classmate Ryan Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) took 11th in 1:10.89.

Moules also ran the lead leg for Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team that was edged out by Bridgewater State University in a photo finish with its time of 3:26.858. Also running legs for the Skyhawks were freshman Matthew Baldasare (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), junior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) and junior Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial).

Staley, a two-time All-American for the high jump, placed second in the event today with his leap of 6-feet, 8.75-inches to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships in March. It marks the fifth-highest jump in Division II through the first two weekends of the season.


Junior All-American Nick Staley provisionally qualified for nationals in the high jump and also was part of the Skyhawks 4x400-meter relay that placed second.

Baldasare ran to third in the 400-meter dash, logging a time of 50.11-seconds, while Smith placed seventh in 51.47.

Sophomore Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) led three Stonehill runners in the top five in a field of 45 runners in the one mile run with his time of 4:24.78. Senior Christopher Dooley (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished third in 4:29.39, while junior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Douglaston) took fifth in 4:32.71.

Other Stonehill Performances of Note: 

Stonehill placed two runners in the top five of the 1000-meter run, led by freshman Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) with a time of 2:37.75 in his collegiate debut, a mere 0.43 shy of a top three finish. Senior All-American Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) finished fifth in 2:38.13.

Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with his time of 22.93-seconds, while senior Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) finished seventh in 23.06. Grubel also finished seventh in the 60-meter dash with his time of 7.24-seconds after qualifying eighth in the field of 93 entries with his preliminary time of 7.20-seconds. Harris placed 12th in the prelims in 7.22-seconds. 

Freshman Tyler Henseler (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) led five Stonehill runners in the 5000-meter run with his tenth place finish in the field of 28 with his time of 15:49.80.

Freshman Stephen Bomba (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona Prep) finished 15th in a field of 40 entries for the 800-meter run with his time of 2:06.10. 

Stonehill, the defending Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Champions, are now off until Saturday, January 18, when it competes at the University of Rhode Island Sorlien Invitational at the Mackal Fieldhouse at 11 a.m.
