Senior All-American Corey Thomas captured his second New England 110-meter hurdles title and also posted an All-New England performance in the high jump for the fourth-straight year.

Skyhawks finish with 13 All-New England performances for seventh-straight top ten team finish

EASTON, Mass. (May 11, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked third in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, turned in a program-best second place team finish as the 2013 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Stonehill, powered by 13 All-New England performances, including eight today with a pair of individual New England Championship efforts, compiled 66 points to claim its first runner-up plaque. Southern Connecticut State University made it a Northeast-10 Conference sweep of the top two spots by racking up 159 points to win the team title. Northeastern University finished third with 62.50 points, with Bates University the top Division III program in fourth place with 61 points and Boston College rounding out the top five with 56 points.

Senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) captured his second New England Championship in the 110-meter high hurdles with his first place finish in 14.29-seconds. Thomas qualified first in Friday's preliminary round with a school and facility record time of 14.24-seconds to improve his NCAA provisional qualifying standard to the 17^th fastest time in Division II this spring to date. Junior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) finished third to earn his third-straight All-New England performance with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.42-seconds.

Sophomore Nick Staley won his second New England high jump championship of the year by clearing an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 6-feet, 10.75-inches.

Sophomore Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) edged out Thomas for his second New England Championship for the high jump this year as he cleared 6-feet, 10.75-inches to improve his NCAA provisional qualifying standard to 10^th nationally. Staley also won the indoor title in February and posts his second-straight outdoor All-New England performance in the high jump. Thomas finished second with a height of 6-08.75 to earn All-New England honors for the fourth straight year in the event and give him seven outdoor All-New England honors for his career overall.

Stonehill's 4x800-meter relay team finished second with a school record-breaking time of 7:34.77, which was also under the previous New England Championship meet record time of 7:37.50 set by Boston College in 2005. Bates College smashed the record with its winning time of 7:30.45. The Skyhawks broke their previous school record of 7:37.12 set at last weekend's Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Running for Stonehill was senior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) with a 1:54.6 opening leg, before freshman Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) clocked in at 1:52.8 on the second leg, senior Tim Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) ran the third leg in 1:54.5 and then senior Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) posted a 1:52.5 split on the anchor leg. It marks the fourth-straight All-New England performance by the men's 4x800, with Spencer and Hanlon running the event last year as well.

Sophomore All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) earned individual All-New England honors for the first time with his eighth place finish in the 800-meter run in a school-record time of 1:52.44 that also provisionally qualifies for the NCAA Championships. Cooney broke the previous school mark of 1:52.53 set by Nate Morse at the 2011 New England Championships at Southern Connecticut State.

Senior Sam Spencer anchored Stonehill's second place 4x800 relay that broke the school record.

Junior Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) posted his first All-New England performance in the triple jump with a distance of 46-feet, 4.25-inches.

Sophomore All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) also earns his first individual All-New England award after placing eighth in the 1500-meter run in 3:53.81. He finished just ahead of Johnson in ninth place with a time of 3:54.60, while Hanlon finished 13^th in 3:56.39.

Stonehill entered the day in third place behind Southern Connecticut State and Northeastern after posting five All-New England performances on Friday. Sophomore Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) finished second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:02.05, while junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished seventh in 32:44.68. Senior John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) placed fifth for the javelin throw with a distance of 184-feet, 5-inches, junior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) was fifth in the decathlon with 5,523 points and junior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) rounded out the Skyhawks top performers on Friday with an eighth place finish in the 5000-meter run in 14:55.01.

Junior Nathaniel Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) finished 14^th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:40.96.

Sophomore Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed 15^th in the shot put with a distance of 48-feet, 1.25-inches. 

Stonehill will await NCAA Division II Championship invitations to be announced this coming week. The 2013 Outdoor Championships will be held May 23-25 at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo.
