Stonehill Finishes Third at NE-10 Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 4, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program, ranked fourth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, posted a third place finish at the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by American International College, at The John G. Hoyt, '52 Track & Field Complex as day two of the championship wrapped up today.

Stonehill, which finished day one in second place with 49 points on Friday, completed the two day championship with 114 points. Southern Connecticut State University won its 11th-straight outdoor championship with 228 points, while the University of Massachusetts Lowell placed second with 167 points. Host American International took fourth place with 80 points.

Senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) posted Stonehill's second event win of the weekend with the third outdoor high jump championship of his career. He cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 6-feet, 9.75-inches, along with sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) who placed second on attempts.

Junior Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) earned All-Conference honors for the first time with his second place finish in the triple jump as he cleared 47-feet, 11.25-inches. Classmate George Georgaklis (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) finished ninth at 42-08.75, while freshman Fortune Kalala (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) was tenth with a leap of 41-04.50.

Junior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) earned All-Conference honors for the third straight year in the 110-meter high hurdles with his second place finish in 14.94-seconds. Thomas, a two time event champion, was disqualified for a false start.

Junior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished third in the decathlon, establishing a program record with 5,674 points. He placed first in three events, including the pole vault with a height of 12-feet, 3.50-inches and the discus throw with a distance of 89-feet, 9-inches on Saturday after placing first for the shot put (34-6.25) on Friday. Willgoos also turned in a second place finish in the long jump (20-03.00), while finishing third in the 100-meter dash (12.02-seconds), 400-meter dash (52.74), 110-meter hurdles (17.19), high jump (6-02.00) and javelin throw (125-11).

Senior Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:31.50.

Sophomore Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) earned points for Stonehill in a pair of throwing events. He placed sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 144-feet, 8-inches and finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 46-feet, 0.50-inches. Freshman Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) placed tenth in the shot put with a throw of 44-05.25.

Sophomore All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.31. Sophomore All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) also earned a point for the Skyhawks with an eighth place finish in 1:54.47, while senior Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) took ninth in 1:55.37.

Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 3:23.02. Running the event for the Skyhawks were senior Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade), sophomore Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial), Cooney and Spencer.

Junior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) finished fourth in the 5000-meter run with his time of 14:56.82. Classmate Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) took ninth in 15:19.42, followed by sophomore Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) in 15:21.91 for tenth place.

Sophomore Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) led the way for Stonehill on day one by winning the 10,000-meter run in a Championship meet record time of 32:08.89. He broke the previous meet record time of 32:11.93 held by Adelphi University's Connor Dolan at last year's championship hosted by Southern Connecticut State.

Stonehill will serve as host for the 2013 New England Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium next weekend. The event opens with men's decathlon events on Thursday, May 9, starting at 1 p.m. The Championship continues on Friday at 10 a.m., and Saturday at noon.
