Stonehill Places Second at Holy Cross

Saintil posts second-straight triple jump win with school-record performance to lead three event winners on Saturday

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 21, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program turned in a second place finish out of eight programs competing at Hart Track on the campus of College of the Holy Cross on Saturday.

Stonehill compiled 131 points to finish behind just the University of Maine's 175 points. The University of Massachusetts finished third (99), while Bryant University was fourth (98).

Junior Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) won the triple jump with a school-record shattering distance for the second straight week. He cleared 47-feet, 4.50-inches to break his own previous record of 46-10.75 set last week at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.

Stonehill swept the top three spots in the 1500-meter run, placing all four entries in the first six positions in the standings. Senior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) won the event in 3:56.67, just ahead of classmate Tim Johnson (Thomaston, N.J./Thomaston) in 3:58.51 for second place. Senior Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) rounded out the top three with his third place showing in 4:00.19 and freshman Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finished in sixth place in 4:03.95.


Junior Herby Saintil broke his own school-record in the triple jump for the second straight week for another first place finish.

Senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) and sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) finished first and second, respectively, in the high jump. Thomas cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 6-feet, 9.25-inches, while Staley finished second with a leap of 6-08.00.

Thomas also finished second in the 110-meter high hurdles and improved his NCAA provisional qualifying standard with a time of 14.42-seconds. Junior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) was right behind him in third place in 14.82-seconds.

Sophomore Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed third in the shot put with a distance of 45-feet, 7.25-inches. He also finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 141-feet, 10-inches. Freshman Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) followed in fifth place for the hammer at 129-08.

Freshman Justin Howard-Callender (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) placed third in the long jump with a distance of 21-feet, even. He also posted a 16th place finish in the 100-meter dash in 11.73-seconds.

Thomas and Howard-Callender both ran for Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay that finished third in 42.91-seconds. Also running for the Skyhawks were junior Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and sophomore Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial).

Harris also finished eighth in the 100-yard dash with a time of 11.32-seconds. He also placed tenth in the 200-meter dash in 23.27-seconds.

Stonehill's finished sixth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:26.02. Running the event for the Skyhawks were sophomore All-Americans Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury), freshman Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) and junior Christopher Dooley (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth).

Junior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.09-seconds, just 0.05 ahead of Cooney in 51.14 for sixth place. Smith finished eighth in 51.36 seconds. Moules was also 16th in the 200-meter dash in 23.67-seconds.

Zawalich also finished ninth in the 800-meter run in 1:57.81, while Dooley was right behind in tenth place with a time of 1:57.97. 

Other Stonehill Highlights Include:

Senior Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 11.25-inches.

Junior Scott Waller (Andover, Mass./Andover) placed fifth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:26.00.

Freshmen Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) and Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Mass./St. John's Prep) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, for the discus throw. Hastings had a distance of 127-feet, 11-inches, while Johnson cleared 108-07.

Junior Alexander Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed eighth in the javelin throw with a distance of 141-feet, 8-inches.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday when it hosts its sixth annual Skyhawk Invitational at W.B. Mason Stadium starting at 3 p.m.
