Distance Runners Highlight Day One of Duke Invitational

Zawalich and Massey turn in top five finishes to highlight Skyhawk entries

DURHAM, N.C. (April 5, 2013) – Distance events ruled the day for the Stonehill College men's track & field team while competing at the Duke University Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium today.

Sophomore All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) finished fifth overall and third among collegiate runners in the 1500-meter run with his time of 3:54.35. Senior Tim Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) placed 12th in 3:56.54, while classmate Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was 18th in 3:59.31. Senior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) finished 27th in 4:02.90.

Freshman Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) established a school record and placed fourth in the 3000-meter run with his time of 8:56.13. Junior Scott Waller (Andover, Mass./Andover) finished seventh in 9:01.56.

Junior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) finished third in the B section of the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:46.80. Classmate Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) placed seventh in 14:52.63. Sophomore Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) finished fifth in the C section of the 5000-meter run with his time of 15:26.87. Classmate Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) finished ninth in 15:31.72.

Junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished seventh in the 10,000-meter run with his time of 31:51.00.

Junior Taylor Viotto (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) placed eighth in the javelin throw with his distance of 169-feet, 2-inches.

Other Stonehill Highlights Include:

Sophomore Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed 13th in the hammer throw with his distance of 130-feet even.

Junior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished 19th in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 57.71-seconds. Senior Daniel Padilla (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) finished 26th in 1:04.16.

The Duke Invitational continues with day two on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
