Staley Named NE-10 Field Athlete of the Week

Medway, Mass., sophomore All-American earns award for third time

EASTON, Mass. (March 26, 2013) – Stonehill College sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Field Athlete of the Week by the league office on Monday.

Staley, who earns the award for the second time this season, including the indoor season, (third career), opened the outdoor season by leading a list of five event winners for Stonehill at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University on Saturday. He won the high jump event as he cleared 6-feet, 7.50-inches – just 1.25-inches off the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard. It marks his third event win of the season, including indoors, and sixth of his career in the event.

Staley is coming off an indoor season in which he earned All-America honors for the first time in his career with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships in Birmingham, Ala. He won the New England Championship in February by clearing a personal-best 7-feet, 0.25-inches and earned All-Northeast-10 honors for the first time during the indoor season (second overall) with a second place finish to senior teammate and fellow All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High). Both have cleared 7-feet this year, marking the first time a New England program has had two 7-foot high jumpers since Boston University in 1985.

Staley is a three-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-East Region honoree and All-New England performer for the high jump. Saturday's event win marks his second in two seasons at an outdoor event. His personal-best outdoor high jump is 6-feet, 11.75-inches set in his second place finish at the 2012 NE-10 Championships at Southern Connecticut State University.

Stonehill has Easter Weekend off before returning to action at the Duke University Invitational, in Durham, N.C., Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6.
