Thomas and Staley Compete in High Jump at 117th Penn Relays

Thomas places 11th, Staley 17th on day two at historic Franklin Field

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 27, 2012) – Stonehill College high jumpers Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) and Nicholas Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) competed on day two of the 117th edition of the Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, at historic Franklin Field this morning.

Thomas, a junior All-American and the 2011 indoor high jump national champion, placed 11th in the college eastern competition as he cleared 6-feet, 6.75-inches. Staley, a freshman and NCAA provisional qualifier with Thomas, placed 17th in the field of 27 with a height of 6-feet, 5-inches.

Thomas missed on his first attempt at 6-5 and then cleared it on his second attempt before topping 6-6.75 on his first try. He then missed on his three attempts at 6-8.25 to fall out of the competition. Staley also took two tries to clear 6-5 and then missed on his three attempts at 6-6.75.

University of Connecticut junior Noel James won the event with a height of 6-feet, 11.5-inches. 

Stonehill's women's 4x800-meter relay team will compete at the Penn Relays tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. The group will meet up with the rest of the Skyhawk track and field team on Sunday at the Brown Springtime Open in Providence, R.I.
