Gelcius Named NE-10 Athlete of the Week

Greenwich, Conn., native honored after provisionally qualifying for NCAA Championships

EASTON, Mass. (April 5, 2012) – Stonehill College junior John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) has been named the Northeast-10 Field Athlete of the Week by the league office.

Gelcius, who earns the weekly honors for the first time in his career, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in the javelin as he placed second overall and first among collegiate entries at the University of Connecticut Huskies Invitational on Saturday. He broke his own school record with his throw of 197-feet, 7-inches on Saturday, marking the 13th longest throw in Division II so far this season. It surpasses his previous record of 196-02 set at the season-opening Bridgewater State University Invitational on March 26, 2011.

Gelcius returns after earning All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the javelin during his sophomore season. He posted six top ten finishes in the javelin during the 2011 outdoor season including a first place finish at the Skyhawk Invitational for the second straight year with a throw of 179-feet and eight-inches. Gelcius earned All-Northeast-10 Conference honors for the second-straight year with his second place finish at the NE-10 Championships (183-04). He placed 12th overall at New England's in the event (179-10).

Stonehill, ranked third in the USTFCCCA East Regional rankings index, is back in action on Saturday for the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, starting at 10 a.m. Stonehill will host its annual Skyhawks Invitational the following Saturday, April 14, starting at 10:30 a.m.
