Stonehill Wins Third-Straight Skyhawk Invitational


Sophomore All-American Corey Thomas improved his NCAA qualification time in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning that event as well as the high jump. 

Thomas and Fullerton lead double-winners for Skyhawks as team posts five event wins, 15 top fives

EASTON, Mass. (April 29, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's track and field team, ranked second in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings index, won the Skyhawk Invitational for the third-straight year, besting the field of nine teams at W.B. Mason Stadium on Friday night.

Stonehill compiled 148.50 points to top second-place Northeastern University with 128.50 points. Boston University was third (92 points), the University of Massachusetts Lowell fourth (89) and Boston College fifth (79).

Sophomore All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) improved his NCAA Division II Championship qualification status in the 110-meter high hurdles with his time of 14.45-seconds to place first in the event. Freshman Xavier Harris-Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) was second in 15.10-seconds. Thomas also placed first in the high jump with a facility record leap of 6-feet, 10.25-inches.

Senior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) was also a double-winner for the Skyhawks, starting with his winning performance in the 800-meter run in 1:53.04, qualifying for the New England Championships. He edged his teammate, sophomore All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) by 0.01-seconds as Hanlon took second in 1:53.05 to also qualify for New Englands.

Fullerton and Hanlon also ran legs for Stonehill's top 4x800-meter relay team that placed first in a New England Championship qualifying time of 7:50.69.


Senior All-American Patrick Fullerton won the 800-meter run in near school-record time and also led the 4x800-meter relay team to victory on Friday night.

Sophomore John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) won the javelin throw competition with a distance of 179-feet, 8-inches.

Junior Pak Lul (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) placed second in the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 48.63-seconds, qualifying for the New England Championships for the event. He broke the previous school record of 49.10-seconds set by Derek Hebert at UMass Lowell on April 15, 2006. Senior All-American Nathan Morse (Whitinsville, Mass./Holy Name) placed seventh in 49.73-seconds. Lul also turned in a sixth place finish in the field of 29 sprinters in the 200-meter dash in 22.82.

Sophomore Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) was second in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 11.25-inches. Classmate Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) was fourth at 13-05.25.

Junior Daniel Kincade (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) finished fourth in the hammer throw with a school-record distance of 164-feet, 3-inches. He broke his own previous record of 162-11 set earlier this month at the Bryant Invitational.

Senior All-American Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) led 14 Skyhawks that competed in the field of 38 runners in the 1500-meter run with his time of 3:58.86 to place third overall. Sophomore Samuel Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was fifth in 4:00.17, while senior Zachary Lankow (Saugus, Mass./St. John's Prep) was sixth in 4:00.60 and sophomore Tim Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) seventh in 4:02.36. Junior Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) rounded out the five Stonehill runners in the top ten with his tenth place finish in 4:02.71.

Junior Pak Lul broke the school record in the 400-meter dash as part of a strong night.

Junior Corey Donahoe (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) placed third in the 5000-meter run in 15:31.74.

 

Junior John Driscoll (Revere, Mass./Revere) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.64-seconds.

 

Senior Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) was sixth in the discus with a throw of 126-feet, 7-inches. Classmate Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) was eighth at 14-08. Newton was also sixth in the shot put with a throw of 45-feet, 10-inches. Senior Patrick Fanning (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) took seventh in the shot with a throw of 44-2.75.

 

Freshman George Georgaklis (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.58-seconds. He was also tenth in the triple jump at 40-feet, 6.75-inches.

 

Sophomore Brandon Dunham (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) was ninth in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 5.25-inches.

 

Stonehill is back in action next weekend when it opens its championship season at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, next Friday and Saturday.
