Thomas heads list of eight USTFCCCA All-Region honorees for Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (March 9, 2011) – Sophomore All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) has been named the East Region Male Field Athlete of the Year for the second-straight year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association and headlines a list of eight from the men's track and field team to collect All-East Region honors from the organization.

Thomas earned All-East Region honors for both the high jump and 60-meter hurdles. Also earning All-Region honors in two events is senior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) for the mile run as well as a part of the Skyhawks' 4000-meter distance medley relay team. Also earning All-Region honors for the Skyhawks are seniors Nathan Morse (Whitinsville, Mass./Holy Name) and Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) and sophomore Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's) as part of the DMR, senior Dan Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) for shot put, junior Daniel Kincade (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) for weight throw and freshman Xavier Harris-Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) in the 60-meter hurdles.

The USTFCCCA has named All-Region honorees for indoor track & field in Division II for the first time this winter. The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction.

Thomas, who earned USTFCCCA East Region Field Athlete of the Year honors for both the indoor and outdoor seasons as a freshman, is ranked second nationally for the high jump and fifth in the 60-meter high hurdles entering this weekend's NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. He has earned Northeast-10 Conference Male Athlete of the Year honors for the second-straight year for the indoor season and captured NE-10 titles for the high jump and 55-meter hurdles this winter, while finishing as runner-up at the New England Championships for the high jump and third in the 60-meter hurdles to collect All-New England honors for both for the second-straight year.

Thomas cleared 7-feet, 1.75-inches in winning the high jump at the Boston University Valentine's Invitational on February 12, besting his previous Division II-high jump for the season at that point by three quarters of an inch. The height is now good for second nationally in Division II. Thomas broke his own school-record in the 60-meter high hurdles at the New England Championships two weeks ago, clocking in at 8.12-seconds in the finals. He is registered in at fifth nationally with a converted time of 8.01-seconds from his NE-10 Championship record time of 7.48-seconds at 55-meters. He earned All-East Region honors for both events.

Thomas has won the high jump in seven of the eight events he participated in and won the hurdles five times this winter. He enjoyed a record-breaking indoor season as a freshman at Stonehill, qualifying for the NCAA Championships for both the high jump and 60-meter hurdles. He earned All-America honors with his third-place finish in the high jump (6'11.5") in Albuquerque, N.M. Thomas posted the top indoor high jump in Division II last winter, clearing a program-record 7'2.25" to win the New England Indoor Championship. He also established the program-record for the 55-meter hurdles with his time of 7.45-seconds in placing second at the New England Championships, ranking third nationally for that event entering the Indoor Championships.

Fullerton, Pilz, Morse and Hanlon make up Stonehill's distance medley relay team that will also compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend. They are ranked fifth nationally with their school-record time of 9:53.45 set at the BU Valentine's Invitational on February 12. That time is good for second in the East Region. Pilz runs the opening 1,200-meter leg, with Morse next for the 400-meter run, Hanlon the 800-meter leg and Fullerton anchoring with the mile.

Fullerton also earned All-Region honors with the fifth-fastest mile time in the region this season of 4:14.40 set at the NE-10 Championships when he finished third. He will be making his fourth trip to an NCAA Championship after qualifying at 1000-meters during the 2010 outdoor season and advancing twice with the cross country team. Fullerton captured the New England Championship two weeks ago for the indoor 1000-meter run with a time of 2:27.04.

Newton ranks fourth in the East Region for the shot put with his distance of 45-feet, 1.75-inches set at the Tufts Stampede in early February, placing him third that day.

Interviews with Thomas and head coach Karen Boen

Kincade is an All-East Region thrower with the fourth-best distance of 51-feet, 10.5-inches at the Tufts Stampede. He posted the first two throws in program history over 50 feet this season, breaking the previous school record of 49-feet, 5-inches by Matt Ellis at the 2002 NE-10 Championships. Kincade had a distance of 51-feet, 8.50-inches at the Harvard Open in December.

Harris-Dixon ranks second to Thomas in the East Region for the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 7.73-seconds to finish runner-up to his teammate at the NE-10 Championships and earn All-Conference honors.

Thomas and the men's 4000-meter distance medley relay team will represent Stonehill, ranked 18th in the most recent USTFCCCA Division II ratings index, at the NCAA Division II Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. Thomas will compete for the national championship for the high jump as well as run the 60-meter hurdles preliminary round on Friday night, with the hurdles final scheduled for Saturday. The DMR will run for the national championship for that event on Friday night as well.
