D’Agostino, Fullerton and Lul all post individual wins to lead Skyhawks in outdoor opener

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 28, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s track and field team opened its outdoor season with a fourth place finish at the Worcester City Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, on Saturday.

Stonehill was fourth out of 11 programs at the event which was won by host WPI with 203 points. Fitchburg State College was second (143pts), University of Southern Maine third (139) and then the Skyhawks (105).

Senior Joseph D’Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton), junior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) and sophomore Pak Lul (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) were all event winners to lead Stonehill. D’Agostino won the high jump by nearly five inches with his winning leap of 6’04”. Fullerton took first in the 1500-meter run with his New England Championship qualifying time of 4:00.12, while also turning in a sixth-place finish in the 5000-meters in 16:17.48. Lul turned in a winning performance in the 400-meter run in 50.13-seconds.

Stonehill dominated the 5000-meter run by placing all four runners in the top six, led by junior Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) in third place in 16:11.32. Sophomore Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) was fourth in 16:13.55, followed closely by junior Dan Fidler (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carisle) in fifth with a time of 16:13.58 and Fullerton in sixth.


Sophomore Pak Lul was a winner at the 400-meter run.

Junior Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) turned in two strong performances in field events for the Skyhawks, keyed by a second-place showing in the shot put with his throw of 40’10.5”, while finishing eighth in the discus with his distance of 120’4”.

Juniors Nathan Morse (Whitinsville, Mass./Holy Name) and Nicholas Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) finished back-to-back in third and fourth, respectively in the 800-meter run. Morse posted a time of 2:00.66, followed closely by Campbell in 2:01.25. Freshman Todd Sather (Melville, N.Y./Saint Anthony’s) finished 12th in the event with a time of 2:03.39.

Stonehill’s 4x400 relay team placed fourth in 3:33.59, while its 4x100 relay was fifth in 45.60-seconds.

Other highlights for Stonehill include:

Freshman Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), the indoor school-record co-holder in the pole vault, placed third overall (second among collegians) with his vault of 12’11.50”

Freshman John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) placed third in his collegiate debut in the javelin with his throw of 167’08”. 

Freshman Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) placed third in a 1500-meter run packed with Stonehill runners with a time of 4:03.40. Classmates Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) placed eighth and 12th in 4:12.28 and 4:16.55, respectively. Sophomore Corey Donahoe (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) finished 14th in 4:21.76.

Junior Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) finished sixth in both the discus and shot put. He reached 123’03” in the disc and 40’10.5” with the shot. 

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, April 3, when it participates in the Bryant University Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
