Kevin Claims Sixth at Nationals
Mankota , Minn. – Keith Gill ( Brockton , Mass. /Brockton), the Division II National Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, finished ninth in the Men’s 1 Mile Run at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships held at Minnesota State University on Saturday. Keith, a senior, represented Stonehill College alongside little brother Kevin Gill (Brockton , Mass. / Brockton) in the prestigious event.
Both Kevin and Keith qualified in the preliminary round held Friday. Kevin finished with a time of 4:14.34, while Keith registered a 4:17.32 time. The event’s final round was held today.
In the final race, Keith finished with a time of 4:17.06 – improving on his preliminary time the day before, however, falling short of the event’s top eight spots and All-America honors.
Kevin, a freshman, finished with a time of 4:14.90. His sixth place finish earned him All-America recognition. Kevin is also a member of the Stonehill Men’s Distance Medley team that earned All-America honors with their fifth place finish on Friday.
Freshman Daniel Kirwa (4:12.62) of Harding took the Nation’s top spot in the 1 Mile Run. Kirwa edged out Mansfield ’s Chris Cummings (4:12.63) by one hundredth of a second.
David Metzger (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) also raced in the Men’s 5000 Meter Run. He finished in 14:55.63. Metzger’s finish was 14th overall.
The event marks the end to a historic Indoor season for the Gill brothers, as well as the rest of the Skyhawks. In total, four men from the Stonehill squad earned All-America honors; Dickie Gerry (Bow, N.H./Bow), Tom Woods ( Medfield , Mass. /Medfield), Metzger and Kevin Gill. Kevin became the school's first athlete to win All-America honors twice in the same meet.
