History Made At New England Championships

 

Senior Keith Gill became the first Stonehill runner to collect an New England Indoor Championship.

Boston, Mass. - Ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region by the United States Track and Field Collegiate Coaches Association (USTFCCA), the Stonehill men's indoor track team turned in a performance for the ages, finishing in a tie for fifth among 60 teams at the 2008 New England Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Boston University Track & Field Center.

The Stonehill showing was highlighted by senior Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.), who blazed his way to a New England Championship, finishing first in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:24.73. That time sets a new school in the event and he becomes the first New England Indoor Champion in school history.

Running in a field that featured traditional powers from the Big East and Atlantic-10, the Skyhawks' 46 points trailed only Sacred Heart (50), Northeast-10 rival, Southern Connecticut (71), Rhode Island (72) and, New England team champion, Connecticut (168).

The Skyhawks also got All-New England finishes in the mile run from freshman Kevin Gill (Brockton, Mass.) and senior Dickie Gerry (Bow, N.H.), who crossed the line in second and fourth places, respectively, with times of 4:10.37 (Gill) and 4:10.52 (Gerry).

Torrey Price (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) registered two All-New England performances -finishing fifth in the 55 meter dash (6.43) and fourth in the 200 meters (21.81).

Senior David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) scored an All-New England showing in the 3000 meters, wrapping the event up in 8:24.63, good for fourth place behind a pair of Providence teammates and Jordan Horwitz from the University of New Hampshire.

Tom Woods (Medfield, Mass.) added another All-New England finish to the Stonehill ledger with an eighth place finish (1:06.01) in the 500 meter run

The quartet of Keith Gill, Kevin Gill, Gerry and freshman Nate Morse (Whitinsville, Mass.) all collected All-New England accolades with their 7:44.07 time in the 4x800 relay.

Up next for the Skyhawks is next Saturday's IC4A meet at Boston University.
