Softball Defeated in 1-0 Decision to Franklin Pierce

EASTON, Massachusetts (April 25, 2019) – Franklin Pierce University squeezed by the Stonehill College softball team with a score of 1-0 on Thursday afternoon on Fr. Gartland Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Stonehill is now 14-23 overall and 10-15 in NE10 play, while Franklin Pierce is now 10-29 overall and 6-19 in Conference play.

For the Skyhawks, Michelle Theilgard and Taylor Whaley recorded the only hits, as Theilgard and Caroline Casey registered the lone walks.

The Ravens saw back-to-back walks in the top of the first inning and Allie Martinez moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. With runners in scoring position, Cat Simmons singled deep in the five-six hole for an RBI single and a 1-0 lead, as Kaitlyn Rooney was out at third on the play. Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) retired the side with her first strikeout of the game.

The Skyhawks saw Theilgard walk in the bottom of the frame, but the Ravens kept them off the base stranding her at first. Both teams put a runner on in the second but neither team was able to move them over.

Franklin Pierce retired 11-straight from the bottom of the third to the bottom of the sixth, as Whaley led off the third with a single through the left side. Casey broke the streak with a walk in the sixth and Theilgard singled down the left field line just hopping the base, but Stonehill was kept from scoring with a strikeout to end the frame.

The Ravens saw their third hit of the game from Ashley Conway to lead off the seventh and both teams went down with three-straight to end the game as Franklin Pierce picked up their third shutout of the season.

Stonehill hosts the Ravens on Fr. Gartland Field for the last two regular season games on Saturday, April 27 with a start time of noon. Prior to the game, the Skyhawks will recognize its three seniors.
