Assumption Sweeps Softball in NE10 Play

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (April 3, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team was swept by Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with scores of 2-0 and 5-2 on Marois Field.

The Skyhawks fall to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in NE10 play, while the Greyhounds improve to 13-10 overall and 7-4 in NE10 play.

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Assumption 2

Neither team saw a hit in the first two innings, as the Skyhawks tallied the first hit of the game in the top of the third on a bunt single from Hannah Ricker, but the frame was soon cut short with the third out of the inning. Assumption tackled the bottom half of the inning with two runs off of four hits for a 2-0 lead.

With two outs and a runners on first and second, Hannah Drakoulakos singled to left field bringing home Julia Mazzeo for a 1-0 lead and Alyssa Beaton followed with her own single to drive in Brooke Murphy from second for a 2-0 advantage. Beaton stole second but the side was retired soon after with a pop up Katherine Rayner, stranding two on base.

Stonehill was hitless in the remaining innings minus a leadoff single by Rayner in the top of the sixth. The side was retired with three straight outs including one of the four strikeouts in the game for the Greyhounds' Mia Norwicki on the mound.

Game 2: Stonehill 2 – Assumption 5

Stonehill was able to get out to a quick 2-0 lead, as Sophie Perez lifted her fourth double of the season into left field scoring Michelle Theilgard who reached on an error and Julia Hartman who walked. Assumption saw a runner reach on an error in the bottom of the frame, but Rayner once again kept them off the bases with back-to-back fly balls.

The Greyhounds shut down the Skyhawks in the top of the second inning as they responded with a run of their own to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame. With one out and runners on second and third, Mckenzie Richards grounded out to Rayner as Alyssa Bialakis snuck in from third. Assumption put another run on the board in the bottom of the third as Murphy scored from second on an error off of Beaton's hit tying the game at two, 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Assumption saw their first lead of the game with three runs off of five hits with a two-out rally. Caitlin Mirabell connected at the plate for her first hit of the game sending it to right field driving in Hinojosa and Peabody for a two run single, 4-2.  Mazzeo tallied her second and recorded her only RBI of the game extending their lead to three, 5-2.

The Skyhawks recorded a hit in each of the last two innings, but the Greyhounds halted Stonehill at the plate stranding a runner on in each inning.

Stonehill (3-12, 0-5 NE10) welcomes Bentley University to Fr. Gartland Field tomorrow, Thursday April 4 for a divisional Conference doubleheader with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. for the Skyhawks home opener.
