Hartman connects for first double of her career

GARDEN CITY, New York (March 23, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team opened Northeast-10 Conference play with two losses to Adelphi University on Saturday with scores of 7-2 and 6-4 on Janet L. Ficke Field.

Game 1: Stonehill 2 – Adelphi 7

Adelphi wasted no time and scored two runs in the first and three in the second to open the game with a 5-0 lead. Stonehill saw its first hit in the top of the first inning by Maille Bennett, but the Panthers' five hits and two errors made by the Skyhawks were the difference in the first frames.

Stonehill began to fight back in the top of the third and fourth with a run in each, cutting the deficit to three, 5-2. Caroline Casey singled through the left side to lead off the inning and Taylor Whaley connected for her second-career double scoring Casey from first with no outs in the third inning. With two outs in the fourth and a runner on second, Genna Hartman  drove in the second run of the game off of her first double of her career.

Adelphi drove in two more runs, including Emily Turney's solo shot to left center for a 6-2 advantage, and then Emily Whitman flew out to right center for a sacrifice fly scoring Kailah Konkel from third with one out, 7-2. Stonehill saw its most runners on base in the top of the seventh, but the Panthers' defense kept the Skyhawks' two runners from scoring for their first NE10 win of the season.

Game 2: Stonehill 4 – Adelphi 6

Adelphi outhit Stonehill 10-5 in the second game, as the Skyhawks were able to kick off the game with a RBI single from Sophie Perez knocking in Bennett for a 1-0 lead. Adelphi put pressure on the Skyhawks in the bottom of the frame by getting three base runners on but Genna Hartman retired the side with her sole strikeout.

With three hits in the second, including a single, double, and a sacrifice fly, Adelphi raked in three runs to take a two-run lead, 3-1. In the top of the third, Stonehill looked to put more runs on the board, but was halted by the Panthers' defense once more as they stranded three on base.

Adelphi broke open the game with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, 6-1, from four of their 10 hits in the game. Stonehill responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, 6-4. With no outs and runners on first and third, Perez reached on a fielder error, bringing home Michelle Theilgard for the first run. After a walk to load the bases and a pitching change for the Panthers, Genna Hartman scored on a wild pitch, 6-3. A one-out single from Carly Rennie brought in Perez from third for the third run, before Kristin Fealy retired the side with two strikeouts.

Stonehill left one runner on base in the top of the sixth, while Adelphi looked to get more as they left two on base in the bottom of the frame, before the Skyhawks went down three straight in the top of the seventh for the Panthers' second NE10 win.

Stonehill (3-9, 0-2 NE10) looks to bounce back against Pace University tomorrow, Sunday, March 24 with a doubleheader on Pace Softball field with a first pitch slated for noon.
