Softball Falls Twice to West Chester

KISSIMMEE, Florida (March 8, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team fell twice to West Chester (Pa.) University (6-5) on Friday afternoon with scores of 4-0 and 3-1.  

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – West Chester 4

The Golden Rams shutout the Skyhawks in the first inning with three-straight outs, as West Chester went on to score two runs off of two hits in the bottom of the frame. Bri Garber opened the inning with a single to third base and advanced to second on a ground out. Emily Maseth connected on a double to left field scoring Garber from second, 1-0. Maseth easily stole third as Heidi McCollester drove her home to add to the Golden Rams' score, 2-0.

Both teams only saw one hit each in the next three innings, before the Golden Rams added another two runs to their score, 4-0, off of one hit and two errors. Stonehill saw its only hit in the top of the fifth inning as Sophie Perez singled to center field.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Garber started a rally with a bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error. West Chester saw two batters walk, before McCollester walked to score the third run and Courtney Stump reached first on a fielding error to bring home Annamarie Hartman for a four-run advantage, 4-0.

Katherine Rayner held off the Golden Rams in the bottom of the sixth inning allowing no runs, but the Skyhawks saw no hits in the top of the seventh inning as West Chester held on for a 4-0 win.  

Game 2: Stonehill 1 – West Chester 3


Casey went 1-for-3 in game two against the Golden Rams

Stonehill started the game on top of the West Chester with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second. Hayley Tobin walked and Caroline Casey tallied the Skyhawks first hit of the game to put runners on first and third. Taylor Whaley singled up the middle to bring home Tobin for a 1-0 lead.

West Chester responded with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the third scoring Emily Kim from third to tie the game at one, 1-1. The Skyhawks saw back-to-back innings with no hits and no one left on base, as the Golden Rams' Hartman reached on an error and Garber scored from second for its first lead of the game, 2-1

In the top of the sixth, West Chester added one more run to the scoreboard to secure its second win of the day, 3-1, on a double to left center bringing home Maseth from first.

Stonehill (2-6) plays in its final doubleheader of spring break as the Skyhawks face the University of Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. and Molloy College at 1:45 p.m. in Clermont, Florida.
