CLERMONT, Florida (March 5, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team led throughout a 5-2 victory over the University of Mary on Tuesday morning and then fell to No. 14 Grand Valley State University, 9-0 in its second doubleheader of the season.
Game 1: Stonehill 5 – University of Mary 2
Stonehill opened up the game with a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and one in the second, as the Skyhawks were able to keep the Marauders off base in the first, second and third innings. With one out, Gianna Azzato, Michelle Theilgard, and Caroline Casey walked to get the bases loaded for Genna Hartman and Julia Hartman who both walked for the first two RBI of the game, 2-0.
In the top of the second, Theilgard connected for her 10th double of her career to bring home Azzato from second, but Theilgard was thrown out at third in an attempt to stretch it into a triple for the third out of the inning, 3-0.
Casey saw her second walk of the game in the top of the fourth to bring home Maille Bennett who singled, extending the lead to four, 4-0. After stranding two on base in the third, the Marauders Haley Berube reached on a fielder's choice scoring Kasidy Chileen from third to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. Katherine Rayner retired the side with one of her six strikeouts in the game leaving runners on first and second.
The University of Mary threated once more with one out and runners on first and third, as Chileen singled scoring Emma Noble from third for a two-run difference, 4-2. Rayner got the next batter to ground out for the second out and Kylie Alto singled to load the bases, but on a passed ball, Carly Rennie was able to get back to home to tag out the advancing runner from third.
Azzato reached base once more in the top of the seventh with two outs as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Julia Hartman to extend the Skyhawks lead to three, 5-2. Rayner recorded her second win of the season with two ground outs and a pop up to close out the bottom of the frame.

Game 2: Stonehill 0 – No. 14 Grand Valley State 9
Genna Hartman, Sophie Perez, Cassie Holmgren, and Taylor Whaley were the only Skyhawks to tally hits in the shutout, as Grand Valley State University combined for 16 hits in the victory. For the Lakers, Taylor Rieger went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and two RBI, as Bailey Thatcher was the only other Laker to registered two RBI as she went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Four other Lakers tallied a RBI.
The Skyhawks' Julia Perrone held the Lakers to a 3-0 lead through the bottom of the sixth inning, until Grand Valley State University opened up the game with a six-run top of the seventh, extending their lead to nine, 9-0.
Stonehill (2-2) will take Wednesday off before facing Wilmington (Del.) University and Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday, March 7 with first pitch 1:45 p.m.
