Softball Splits Doubleheader With Assumption

Theilgard belts fourth homerun of the season

EASTON, Mass. (April 12, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball split Northeast Division Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Assumption College with scores of 5-1 and 0-1, Thursday afternoon on Fr. Gartland Field.

Game 1: Stonehill 5 – Assumption 1

Stonehill saw two runs get across the plate in the bottom of the first inning off one hit. Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) led off with a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a grounder. Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy) also walked and stole third for runners on second and third. Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) came up and with a 1-and-2 count placed the ball over the center fielder's head for a two-run double, 2-0.

Both teams tallied three hits each for the next three innings, and the Skyhawks added three runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, 5-0. Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) kicked off the inning with a single to right field and Theilgard launched her fourth homerun of the season over the center field fence, 4-0. Perez walked and moved over to second on a ground out, which was followed by Erin Brayden's (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) double to right center, increasing the Skyhawk's lead to five, 5-0.

Assumption loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and with two outs, Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) retired the side with a fielder's choice, getting the runner out at second. The Greyhounds held off the Skyhawks with two ground outs and a line out in the bottom of the frame.

The Greyhounds were active on the bases in the seventh inning, as Victoria Petrie was hit by a pitch and Ally Hinojosa, who pinch ran, advanced on a wild pitch. Hinojosa took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to four, 5-1. With one out, Caitlin Mirabell walked, and the bases soon had runners on first and second with another walk. Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) halted the inning with the final out as Kayla Peabody fouled out to third base.

Game 2: Stonehill 0 – Assumption 1


Perez registered her seventh double of the season and ninth double of her career

Stonehill and Assumption each tallied their first hit of the game in the first inning, as the Skyhawks were the ones to leave a runner on base and the Greyhounds went down with three-straight outs.

In the top of the second inning, Stephanie Menard launched the first pitch she saw and lifted it over the right center fence for a 1-0 lead for Assumption. Freshman Genna Hartman (East Granby, Connecticut/East Granby) retired the side after that with two strikeouts and a fly out to left. With one out in the bottom of the frame, the Skyhawks' Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) doubled to left center and Brayden connecticut for a hit of her own to get runners on first and third. After a second out and runners on second and third, the Greyhounds' Mia Nowicki finished the inning with a pop up to keep the two runners from scoring.

Stonehill and Assumption recorded two more hits a piece in the remaining five innings, but neither team was able to get the run across as the Greyhounds shutout the Skyhawks, 1-0.

Stonehill (6-19, 5-10 NE10) is scheduled to take on Franklin Pierce University this weekend for their three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 with a noon start with a single game following on Sunday, April 15 with a 2:00 p.m. start.
