EASTON, Mass. (April 7, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team was defeated by the College of Saint Rose with scores of 5-1 and 3-1 on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Game 1: Stonehill 1 – Saint Rose 5

Saint Rose saw two homeruns in the first game, a solo from Astasia Myler in the top of the second and a two-run homerun from Ryane Brush in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. The Golden Knights then extended their lead to four, 4-0, in the top of the fifth after Myler singled to center field and Briana Bowen scored on an error.

In the top of the sixth, Saint Rose strung together three hits to get one more run across for a 5-0 lead. After a leadoff double, Beth Jones followed with a single to left center to score Sydney Cimini from second. Erin Maloney also found the outfield with a double to right center, but Kazi Walker (Quaker Hill, Connecticut/Waterford) was able to keep Jones at third and then retired the side stranding two on base.

With one out, Stonehill quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a walk, a bunt, and a line drive to left field. Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) grounded out for the second out to bring home Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) cutting the deficit to four, 5-1. Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy) also walked to get the bases loaded again, but Thalia Santiago closed the game with a pop up to shortstop.

Game 2: Stonehill 1 – Saint Rose 3

The Skyhawks were able to get a run on the board early in the game and with two outs, as Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) got on base by a fielding error and later scored second to get in scoring position for Theilgard. The freshman was able to rip a single to left field to bring in Ricker for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Senior pitcher Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) was able to fend off the Golden Knights in the first two innings, leaving three on base and allowing only one hit, but in the top of the third, Saint Rose responded with two runs of their own, 2-1. With one out, Katie Shevlin doubled to right field and Nicoletti singled advancing Shevlin home after a fielding error. Mayette got Briana Bowen to ground out for the second out, but Brush tallied a single of her own to bring home Dana Nicoletti from third for a one-run lead.

Saint Rose's Emily Kurtzner kept the Skyhawks off the bases for four innings and the Golden Knights extended the lead by one in the top of the sixth with a grounder to first base bringing in Ryana Brush from third for a two-run lead, 3-1.

Stonehill put pressure on Saint Rose in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) doubled down the left field line and Maille Bennett (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) drew a walk to put runners on first and second. The Skyhawks loaded the bases on a fielding error, but Kurtzner closed the inning with a ground out earning her fourth win of the season.
