Casey launched her first homerun of her career
HOOKSETT, N.H. (March 31, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team took its first doubleheader sweep of the season against Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference and divisional play with scores of 2-1 and 5-3 on Saturday on SNHU Softball Field.

For the Skyhawks, senior pitcher Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) threw her fifth complete game of the season for her third victory of the year, allowing only three hits, one earned run, one walk, and striking out seven. Stonehill's four hits included two homeruns, one each from Caroline Casey (East Moriches, New York/Center Moriches) and Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy). Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) and Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) chipped in the other two hits, as both tallied doubles in the victory.
Neither team was able to see a hit in the first three innings, but the Skyhawks were able to see one runner on base in the bottom of the second inning as Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) walked and was left on base.
In the fourth inning, the Penmen tallied its first hit as Jordan Wade singled through the left side of the field and was advanced all the way to third, but Mayette kept Southern New Hampshire from scoring with a ground out to first base. Stonehill reacted to the lone hit with its own in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Theilgard lifted a 1-1 count over the left field fence for her third homerun of the season for a 1-0 lead.
Both pitchers were dominate in the fifth inning, and Stonehill was able to react and extend its lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the sixth. Casey sent a long ball over the left field fence for her first homerun of her career with one out. Rennie followed with her fourth-career double and Theilgard walked, but Brayden stopped the offensive attack as she grounded into a double play.
With last at bats, the Penmen gave it all and with no outs, Brittany Perdigao led off the inning with a single and was moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Erin Garczynski found a hole in right center field to drive in Perdigao from second, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1. On a wild pitch, Garczynski advanced to third, but Shay Sauvageau was thrown out at home for the first out of the inning with a toss from Rennie to Mayette to keep the lead. Mayette fended off the Penmen with a ground out and a strikeout to end the game, 2-1.

Stonehill saw Rennie and freshman Gianna Azzato (East Meadow, New York/East Meadow) tally two hits each for 2-for-3 at the plate. Both scored one run each, while Azzato knocked in two RBI with her first triple of the season. Freshman pitcher Genna Hartman (East Granby, Connecticut/East Granby) tossed her fifth-complete game this season for her first victory in the circle.
The Penmen got ahead early with a run in the top of the first and the third off a sacrifice bunt and a single to center field for a 2-0 lead. Hartman held Southern N.H. to three hits from the fourth to the sixth and stopped them from scoring.
Stonehill fought back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs off six hits for a come-from-behind lead, 5-2. Casey led off with a single through the right side and with no outs, Perez recorded her sixth double of the season bringing in Rennie and Casey, 2-2. After the Skyhawks saw its first out of the inning, Azzato found a hole in center field and reached third base for her first triple for the Skyhawks first lead of the game, 4-2. Hartman then drove the ball to right center, easily scoring Azzato from third base, 5-2. Southern New Hampshire's Ali Alherton stopped the bleeding and retiring the side with back-to-back grounders.
Hartman quickly got two outs in the top of the seventh, but the Penmen saw Garczynski drive the ball through the left side to bring in Wade from third, cutting the deficit to two, 5-3. Hartman closed the game with a short pop up to Perez for the Skyhawks' doubleheader sweep.
Stonehill (4-12, 3-3 NE10) is scheduled to battle the Penmen for the third game of the series on Monday, April 2 in Hooksett, New Hampshire at SNHU Softball Field with a first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
