Mercy Takes Two From Softball

CLERMONT, FLORIDA. (March 10, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team fell to Mercy College Saturday night twice with scores of 6-2 and 10-2 in Clermont, Florida.

Game 1: Stonehill 2 – Mercy 6

Mercy got the game rolling with a run in the bottom of the first with two outs, as Kaylee Stevens found the gap and tripled, scoring Hannah Mueller from first base for a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks held the Skyhawks to no hits through the third inning, as Mercy added three runs to their score, 4-0, from four hits. With three straight singles, Mueller drove in Mackenzie Dunlop from second for the first run. Destini Bullock added to the Maverick's single rally with two outs to bring in Erica Handegard and Mikayla Newham for a four-run lead, 4-0.

Mercy had another productive inning after a Stonehill pitching change, adding two to their lead, 6-0, on a single and a double.

In the top of the fifth, the Skyhawk's offense came alive, starting with a leadoff walk from senior Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) and freshman Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) followed with her first triple and RBI. Freshman Maille Bennett (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) responded with a hard ground ball to second to easily score Ricker from third, cutting the deficit to four, 6-2. Stonehill held the Mavericks to two hits in the fifth and sixth, but the Skyhawks were only able to connect on one hit in the sixth and seventh to take a 6-2 loss.

Game 2: Stonehill 2 – Mercy 10

Mercy once again got an early lead, 3-0, on one hit and an error after back to back walks. Stonehill was able to record their first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning from Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) who tallied her second double of the season and fourth of her career.

The next three innings were quiet until Mercy jumped at the opportunity to score on an error which added two runs to their score, 5-0, in the top of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, with two outs, Stonehill gave up a walk with the bases loaded, 6-0, and then Mikayla Newham singled driving in Jessica Lombardi, 7-0. A bases clearing triple from Mueller extended the Mavericks' lead to 10, 10-0.

In the bottom of the frame, Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) lead off the inning with a single and Caroline Casey (East Moriches, New York/Center Moriches) doubled cutting the deficit to nine, 10-1. With one out, Taylor Whaley (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) connected on a hard grounded to second bringing home Casey who advanced to third on a throw from her double. The Mavericks wrapped up the game with another grounder to sweep the Skyhawks on the day.

Stonehill (0-8) concludes their spring break trip with a double header against Molloy College, who has been in the NCAA Tournament back-to-back years, tomorrow, Sunday, March 11 with first pitches at 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. at the National Training Center.
