Softball Unable to Get Past Northern State and NYIT

CLERMONT, FLORIDA. (March 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team was unable to get past Northern State University and NYIT Thursday afternoon with scores of 12-0 in five innings and 4-1, respectively, in Clermont, Florida.

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Northern State 12 (5 innings)

Stonehill was unable to get the ball out of the inning in the top of the first inning, as Northern State connected for two runs off of four hits for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, the Wolves' Kennady Thompson singled to center field scoring Shayla Steinley, 1-0. Jamie Fisher followed with a single, as she got the bases loaded and Cassidy Schaar drove in Katie Dawson from third, before Stonehill wrapped out the inning with a pop out to the catcher leaving three on base, 2-0.

Neither team was able to get a run across in the second inning, but Stonehill saw its lone hit of the game as Julia Perrone (North Reading, Massachusetts/North Reading) broke the no hitter for the Wolves with a single up the middle. The Wolves continued driving in runs in the bottom of the third, as seven runs came across home plate for a 9-0 lead.

As Northern State retired the Skyhawks in the top of the fourth, the Wolves took the momentum and added three more to their score off of four hits, as the Skyhawks stopped the bleeding by leaving two on base and getting Jenna Helgeson to ground out to shortstop.

Game 2: Stonehill 1 – NYIT 4

Stonehill's Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chalemsford) went 2-for-4, as Rennie drove in the lone RBI and Ricker tallied one of two doubles. Senior pitcher Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) notched eight strikeouts in the 7.0 innings pitched.

Neither team was able to get on board In the first inning, but the Bears took advantage of back-to-back singles followed by a double from Stephanie Neglia to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Skyhawks responded in the bottom of the frame, as Caroline Casey (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) tallied the first hit for Stonehill, but NYIT halted the offense with a ground out to second for the third out.

With a lead off double for the Bears, Sydney Kratzert registered a RBI as Brooke Scherer scored in the top of the third for a two-run lead, 3-0.

Similarly, NYIT etched another run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with two outs as Jessica Daniel singled and stole second to precede Lizul Portugal singling and driving in Daniel from second for a 4-0 lead.

After NYIT put more pressure on Stonehill, the Skyhawks saw Peterson Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) double in the bottom of the fifth, as Ricker singled and Rennie drove in Peterson for a 4-1 ball game.

Stonehill (0-6) takes a day off before facing Mercy College on Saturday, March 10 with game times of 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
