Softball Falls to Florida Tech in Season Opening Twinbill

MELBOURNE, FLORIDA. (March 6, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped its' season opening doubleheader against Florida Institute of Technology in two 8-0, six-inning losses, on Tuesday afternoon at Bottge Field on the campus of the Panthers.  

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Florida Tech 8 (6 innings)

Stonehill saw three batters combine for four hits, including Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy), Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional), and Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy), as Peterson went 2-for-2 at the plate.

The Panthers saw an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second and followed that up with three more runs in the fifth inning, 6-0, from six hits. Both innings, the Skyhawks were able to stop the bleeding by leaving three runners on base both times.

With two out and no one on base, Florida Tech saw Lexi Betterman single to right field and Xiarysse Emerenciana tripled to right center driving in Betterman for a 7-0 lead. Ally Carver followed Emerenciana's triple with a single of her own through the left side to score her from third, ending the game in six innings, 8-0.

Game 2: Stonehill 0 - Florida Tech (6 innings)

The Skyhawks combined for six hits in the second game against the Panthers including seeing three from Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford), two from Theilgard, and one from Caroline Casey (East Moriches, New York/Center Moriches).Game 2: Stonehill 0 – FIT 8 (6 innings)

Florida Tech jumped right on board in the bottom of the first with seven runs, including scoring three before the Skyhawks were able to get two outs. The Panthers then rallied with two, scoring four more tallies from two more hits, 7-0.

Stonehill was able to fend off Florida Tech for four innings, until the Panthers' Emerenciana doubled to right center registering her seventh hit of the day in the lead-off spot and scoring on an error for its third game run-ruling a team, 8-0.

Stonehill face Wayne State (Nebraska) College and Saint Cloud State University tomorrow, Wednesday, March 7 at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively, at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
