Softball Unable to Fight Back in 4-3 Loss to Saint Anselm

Stonehill outhits Saint Anselm eight to seven

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 28, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team was able to fight back against Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference play, as the Hawks defeated the Skyhawks 4-3 Friday night.

For the Skyhawks, Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) went 2-for-3 with one RBI, as Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) batted 1-for-4 with one run scored, a double and one RBI. Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) recorded the other RBI, while batting 1-for-3 in the loss.

Saint Anselm was able to tally four hits in the five-scoreless innings for both teams, as the Skyhawks were only able to record two.

However, in the top of the sixth, Stonehill kicked off the inning as Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) singled down the left field line and advanced on a ground out by Lester, for the first out of the inning. After putting Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) on base to pinch run, Jordan ripped her fifth double of the season to left center, bringing in Rayner from second for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Jordan advanced on a wild pitch and Squeri drove her home with a single to the opposite field giving Stonehill a 2-0 lead.

Saint Anselm rallied in the bottom of the sixth gaining a two-run lead, 4-2, off of three hits. After back-to-back singles by the Hawks, Erin Thompson reached on a throwing error from her sacrifice bunt, and Maggie Murphy scored from second to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Shannon Colson bunted back to the pitcher by was safe at first, bringing in Karoline Leavitt, who was on third, 2-2. Still with no outs, Shannon McLaughlin reached on a fielder's choice, but was caught trying to advance drawing the throw giving Colson time to score from second and Thompson an easy in from third.

With two outs, the Skyhawks saw Hartman single to third base, moving Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) over to second. Lester connected on a pitch and singled to center field, driving in Perez from second, cutting the deficit to one, 4-3. Jordan hit the ball to the left side following the run,  and the Hawks took the easy out at third, retiring the lead runner for the final out.

Softball (11-28, 9-13 NE10) faces Saint Anselm tomorrow, Saturday, April 29 in its final regular season doubleheader of the season, with a first pitch slated for noon.
