Stonehill tallies 11 hits in two games
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 27, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped two Northeast-10 Conference games, first to Southern New Hampshire University, 6-5 in eight innings, and then to Bentley University, 1-0, on Thursday, April 27 on Penmen Field.
Game 1: Southern N.H. 6 – Stonehill 5 (8 innings)
Southern New Hampshire strung together two runs in the bottom of the third off of three hits, as Erin Morrissey kicked off the frame with a single to right field and advanced to second on a ground out. Brittany Perdigao reached first on a fielder's choice, but March, who pinched ran, was out at home on the play for the second out of the inning. On a 1-0 count, Katie Horiuchi singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw, sending Perdigao around the bases scoring the first run of the game. Erin Garczynski followed with a double to center field, to drive in the second run of the game, putting the Penmen up 2-0.

Stonehill responded in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1. Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) led off with a single to right field and Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) moved her over with a base hit through the left side. Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) hit the third-straight single of the inning and put the bases loaded with no outs for the Skyhawks. Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) sent the ball to center field to drive in Jordan from third easily and Carbone tried to tie the game, but was called out on a relay.
With two outs, Perez walked in the top of the sixth, which started a rally for the Skyhawks. Kazi Walker (Quaker Hill, Connecticut/Waterford) also walked, bringing up Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford), who singled up the middle. Her hit scored Perez from second, and Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) launched a three-run homerun to center field to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the game, 5-2.
The Penmen had their big inning in the bottom of the sixth, tying up the game with three runs off of four hits. With one out, Hannah Neverett singled up the middle and Jordan Wade reached first on her single putting runners on first and second. With a throwing error, Morrissey got on first base and Devan Rabidou scored from second, 5-3. Erin
Tyrell tallied a single driving in Wade from third, 5-4, and Stonehill held the Penmen from scoring on Horiuchi's fielder's choice getting Morrissey out at home. With two outs, Garczynski walked with the bases loaded bringing in one more run before Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) got out of the jam with a ground out.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning, as Nicole Gubellini shut down the Skyhawks in the top of the eighth with three-straight outs. Southern New Hampshire saw Morrissey reach first on an error, and Tyrell moved her over in the bottom of the frame. On the first pitch, Perdigao bunted and reached first on a throwing error, bringing Morrissey around third and scoring for the game-winning run, 6-5.
Game 2: Bentley 1 – Stonehill 0
Stonehill recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the first by Jordan, as she singled to right field, but Kayleigh Fitzpatrick retired the side on the mound, leaving the senior on base.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the frame by registering the first run of the game, as Kelsey Kennedy singled through the right side with two outs scoring Stacey Korotsky from second, 1-0.
The Skyhawks saw its second hit in the top of the third from Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's), driving the ball to center field with two outs. Fitzpatrick retired the side with a fly out.
Neither team was able to record a hit in the remaining innings, as Stonehill's two hits did not outplay Bentley.
Softball (11-27, 9-12 NE10) travels to Saint Anselm College for a three-game series starting this Friday with a game at 5:00 p.m. on South Athletic Fields.
