Softball Earns a 3-1 Victory Versus Saint Michael’s on Senior Day

Four seniors were recognized prior to the game

EASTON, Mass. (April 22, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team took game one of a three-game series against Saint Michael's College with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon on Gartland Field. Prior to the game, Stonehill's four seniors, Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea), Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's), Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's), and Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) were recognized.

Brayden blasts her second homerun of the season

For the Skyhawks, Squeri pitched her seventh complete game of the season, striking out six batters and allowing only one run and four hits. Four Skyhawks tallied hits, including Lester, Carbone, Squeri and Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). Junior Brayden recorded her second-career homerun.

The Purple Knights got on base early in the top of the first, as Christina Brazeau singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Danielle Barbato was hit by a pitch, but Squeri got out of the inning with a ground out.

Stonehill tallied its first hit in the bottom of the second as Squeri drove the ball to center field, but was only advanced to second, as Danielle Brown retired the side for Saint Michael's.

As it was a pitcher's battle the entire game, Stonehill got up in the bottom of the fourth and with one out Carbone singled to left field with one out. Squeri popped out for the second out of the inning and Brayden followed up with a two-run blast to right center for her second homerun of the season, putting the Skyhawks up 2-0.

Stonehill got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Lester bunted as the leadoff and reached first. Jordan put pressure on the Purple Knights, as she got down a sacrifice bunt and reached first on a throwing error, putting Lester on third with no outs. Carbone followed the two with a long fly ball to left field, scoring Lester on a sacrifice fly. Brown finished the inning with two fly outs.

Saint Michael's was only able to get a run in in the top of the seventh, as Danielle Markowski homered to left field as the leadoff batter. Squeri retired the side with a strikeout and two groundouts.

Stonehill (11-22, 9-7 NE10) hosts Saint Michael's College tomorrow, Sunday April 23 for a doubleheader on Fr. Gartland Field with a first pitch slated for noon.
