Softball Gets Shutout by Adelphi in Doubleheader

Carbone tallies four hits in the two games

EASTON, Mass. (April 8, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team was shutout by Adelphi University Sunday afternoon on Fr. Gartland Field with scores of 13-0 and 11-0, both in five innings.  

Game 1: Adelphi 13 – Stonehill 0

Stonehill tallied four hits in the loss, with two of them coming from Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) and Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) and Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) recording one a piece.

Adelphi took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first off of three hits and one error. A single from Nicoletta Cuccio and Stephanie Staiano and a double from Brenna Martini gave the Panthers the advantage and began the only lead of the game.

The Skyhawks left two on base in the bottom of the first after Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was hit by a pitch with two outs and Squeri advanced her to second on a single to left field. The Panthers closed out the inning with a caught foul ball holding the Skyhawks to no runs.

The Panthers doubled their lead, as four more runs came across the plate in the top of the second for an 8-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Kazi Walker (Quaker Hill, Connecticut/Waterford) got out of a bases loaded situation with her first strikeout of the game.

Two more players came across home in the top of the third, as the Panthers continued to drive in runs adding to their hit total. In the bottom of the frame, Carbone doubled with two outs, but was left on base as Lindsay Mapes recorded her fifth ground out.

Sandelier homered to left center as the lead off batter in the top of the fourth, picking up another run for the Panthers, 11-0. Adelphi wasn't done, as two more runs were added to the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as three hits gave the Panthers its largest lead of the game, 13-0.

Game 2: Adelphi 11 – Stonehill 0 (5 innings)

Carbone and Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) combined for four hits, as Brayden recorded the fifth hit for the Skyhawks.

The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first innings again as Martini reached on a throwing error and Cuccio and Krista King scored. Nicole Camera followed the two runs with a two-run homerun to right field with no outs.

Stonehill left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning as Carbone and Brayden singled with one out and Jessica Vadala got out of the jam with a foul out and a fielder's choice.

Four more runs crossed home in the top of the second, doubling their score once again, 8-0. Four hits and one error gave Adelphi its second 8-0 advantage of the day.

With one out in the top of the third, Cuccio sent a long fly ball out to center field for a sacrifice fly scoring Elisabeth Berard from third and Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) got out of the inning with a ground out, 9-0.

Mayette shut down the Panthers in the top of the fourth with three-straight outs, but Adelphi rallied for two more runs, picking up its ninth shutout of the season, 11-0.

Softball (6-21, 4-6 NE10) will host Assumption College for a single game on Tuesday, April 11 on Fr. Gartland Field with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.
