LIU Post Takes Game One, Softball Battles from Behind to Win Game Two

Easton, Mass. (April 7, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team split with LIU Post Friday afternoon on Gartland Field, falling in the first game 2-0, and coming from behind to win 8-3 in the second game.  

Game 1: LIU Post 2 – Stonehill 0

Perez blasts her second homerun of the season

The Skyhawks outhit the Pioneers 8-5 in game one, but LIU Post's Hannah Olshevski pitched a complete game allowing only one walk and no runs for her eighth win of the season.

LIU Post's Abbey Fortin kicked off the game with a two-run homerun to right center with one out, which ended up being the game winning hit. The blast scored Samantha Marrone from first after she singled to the pitcher.

Stonehill left two runners on base in the bottom of the second inning as Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) singled up the middle with two outs and Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) walked to put runners on first and second. 

The Pioneers also came close to scoring in the top of the third as Marrone reached on a fielding error and Julia Seader was hit by a pitch. Fortin singled to second base advancing Seader to second and Marrone to third, but Stonehill turned a double play as Ashley Melendez grounded out to second base.

Game 2: Stonehill 8 – LIU Post 3

Stonehill took the lead and scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first with two outs, as Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) singled to right center scoring Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) from third after she reached first on her own single, 1-0.

LIU Post rallied in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, as Megan Sneeden homered to center field with one out scoring Ashley Melendez. The Pioneers' Julia Seader also launched the ball over the fence as she blasted one in the top of the third, extending the lead to two, 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Stonehill rallied, scoring seven runs off of four hits, including bookend homeruns from Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) and Perez. Lester singled up the middle to score Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) and Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) for a two-run hit. Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) followed by doubling to left center to score Lester from second. Squeri later drove the ball to deep center field for a sacrifice fly with only one out to score Carbone from third, giving Stonehill a five-run lead, 8-3.

Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was the only hitter on either team to tally a hit in the final two innings, as both teams left one runner on base.

The Skyhawks (4-19, 2-4 NE10) hosts Pace University in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. for its Purple and White Game.
