Softball Suffers Setbacks to Bridgeport and Georgian Court

LEESBURG, Fla. (March 9, 2017) - The Stonehill College softball team faltered at the plate against the University of Bridgeport, 5-3, and Georgian Court University, 5-2, Thursday at Sleepy Hollow Complex. 

Game 1: Stonehill 3 – University of Bridgeport 5

Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI, and her season first homerun. Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) and Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) tallied the other two RBI for the Skyhawks, as Rennie went 1-for-2 and Carbone recorded a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the second, the Purple Knights strung together three singles to score three runs for a 3-0 advantage over the Skyhawks. Meghan O'Leary led off the inning with a single to right field and later stole second for Samantha Sabor to advance her to third for a first and third situation. Yalitza Rodriguez also singled and advanced to third on the throw while Sabor and O'Leary scored. Rodriguez also crossed home, asTara  Faford grounded out to second base for a 3-0 lead.

Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) tallied her second hit of the season, pushing it out to center field, for the Skyhawks' first hit of the game in the bottom of the second.

Stonehill later cut the deficit to two, 3-1, as Squeri homered to center field for her first homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Bridgeport added two runs to the scoreboard, 5-1, as O'Leary recorded a single to left field and Rodriguez followed with a single to right center scoring Kamryn Beach and Reanna Lizardo.

The Skyhawks were able to register a run in the bottom of the sixth as Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) singled to right center and Squeri advanced to third, while Rennie flied out to right field to drive Squeri home, 5-2.

Stonehill controlled the Purple Knights' bats in the top of the seventh with three-straight outs as two batters struck out and one flied out to center field.

Stonehill closed the game with one final run across the plate as Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) kicked off the inning with a single down the right field line. Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) also singled, sending the ball to right center and later Carbone sent the ball long and foul for a sacrifice fly scoring Lester from third for a 5-3 final.

Game 2: Stonehill 2 – Georgian Court 5

Brayden went 2-for-3 in the second game recording her fourth double of the season, as Carbone tallied the other RBI for the Skyhawks.

Samantha Reilly went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Marissa Trezza hit 3-for-3 with two RBI and two doubles.

The Skyhawks kicked off the top of the first with three hits, scoring two runs. Lester singled to center field, reaching first as Brayden singled through the left side advancing Lester to home. Carbone then singled up the middle, scoring Brayden for a 2-0 lead.

Georgian Court quickly responded in the bottom of the first as Trezza doubled to right center scoring Reilly and Lindsey Fishback, tying the game up, 2-2.

The Lions' Trezza doubled to right center scoring Reilly who got on with her own double in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead.

Stonehill had first and second bases loaded with one out as Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) lined into a double play in the top of the fourth, leading one on base.

Georgian Court got Cassandra Varvaro double down the right field line driving home Stephanie Torrence from second base adding another run for the Lions, 3-2.

With two outs, Varvaro reached first on an error by the Skyhawks, but the Lyons scored Bryana Smith from second picking up a two-run lead, 4-2.

Trezza doubled to right center in the bottom of  the third, scoring Reilly from second base after sending a ground rule double to center field, 5-2.

Georgian Court squeezed in one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Varvaro reached first on an error and Smith scored from second for the final run of the game.

The Skyhawks will conclude their trip to Florida with a doubleheader against Molloy College on Saturday, March 12 at 8:00 a.m and 10:30 a.m.
