Brayden launches her first-career homerun
LEESBURG, Fla. (March 5, 2017) - The Stonehill College softball team was unable to get past Northern State University, 9-2 and 2-1, in a doubleheader on Sunday morning at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Florida.
Game 1: Northern State 9 – Stonehill 2
Stonehill's Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) and Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) tallied the Skyhawks only two runs in game one. Carbone batted 2-for-3, while Brayden went 1-for-3 with a double.

The Wolves kicked off the game in the bottom of the first with three runs scored off of four hits. Jenna Helgeson singled up the middle as Rachel Albright followed sending a double into right center scoring Helgeson. Jess Vernon came up with two outs and singled to center field sending Albright home. Jamie Fisher also came up to bat and rallied to give Northern State one more run for a 3-0 advantage.
The Wolves extended their lead by one, 4-0, as Katelynn Dilts sent one over the center field wall in the bottom of the second.
Stonehill got on board in the top of the fourth with Carbone reaching first on an error and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Brayden extended her arms and doubled to left center scoring Carbone. Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) tallied the Skyhawks fourth hit of the game singling to right center sending Brayden across the plate, cutting the deficit to two, 4-2.
Neither team was able to connect in the fifth inning, as the Wolves tallied five insurance runs in bottom of the sixth off of three hits, including a three-run homerun from Helgeson and a single from Shayla Steinley.
Game 2: Northern State 2 – Stonehill 1
The Skyhawks' Brayden launched her first-career homerun to cut the deficit to one, 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Northern State left three batters on base, as Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) struck out three in the bottom of the first.
Rennie shot a rocket down the right field line for the Skyhawks first hit in the top of the second, but Stonehill's offense wasn't able to bat her around.
Northern State had bases loaded in the bottom of the third, as Thompson found a gap in right center field scoring Steinley and Dilts for a 2-0 lead.
Neither team was able to produce runs in the fourth, fifth, or sixth innings as Stonehill tallied its only run from Brayden's solo shot to center field for her first-career homerun in the top of the seventh.
Softball (1-6) battles Winona State University in a doubleheader tomorrow at Sleepy Hollow Complex with start times of 3:30 and 6:00 p.m.
