Softball Completes Weekend Sweep of Saint Michael’s

Sumski, Carbone power Skyhawk offense in 8-1 win

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 10, 2016) – The Stonehill College softball team completed the weekend series sweep of Saint Michael's College at the Southern New Hampshire University Softball Field today in Northeast-10 Conference action, winning 8-1 behind a combined three homeruns and seven RBI from senior Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) and junior Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's).

Carbone also started the game for Stonehill and pitched a complete game, throwing seven innings while only surrendering one run on three hits to go with seven strikeouts. With the win, Carbone improves to 4-1 and drops her sparkling ERA to 1.12 on the year.

Sumski was a force at the plate for Stonehill, finishing 2-for-4 with two homeruns and four RBI, while Carbone recorded a homerun and three RBI. Seniors Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) and Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Connecticut/Coginchaug) combined for three hits and four runs, while Staudle recorded the lone remaining RBI in the game.

For Saint Michael's, junior Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Fontbonne Academy) led the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Massachusetts/Lexington) registered the other hit in the game for the Purple Knights, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Stonehill took the early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first inning when Esposito led off with a single to center field and Staudle followed up with a double to left field to score Esposito from first.

Stonehill added two more runs to its tally in the third, as Sumski connected on her first homerun of the game, a two-run shot to centerfield, scoring Staudle after she walked to start the inning. The Skyhawks blew the game open in the fifth, when Esposito hit a leadoff triple to centerfield and Staudle reached base on an error by the shortstop. With two runners on base, Carbone unloaded on a three-run homerun to dead centerfield to make the score 6-0. Sumski followed up with a solo homerun of her own to go back-to-back with Carbone, adding a run and making the score 7-0.

Saint Michael's broke up Carbone's bid for a complete game shut-out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Staples connected on a seeing eye single to lead off the inning and DelGreco doubled to left field, scoring Staples from first base.

Stonehill capped the scoring in the top of the seventh inning, as junior Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) singled to lead off and Carbone moved her to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Jordan then advanced to third on a wild pitch and Sumski grounded out to the shortstop to get Jordan across home-plate.

With the win, Stonehill improves to 10-3 in the NE-10 and 8-3 in the Northeast Division, good for third place behind Bentley University and Southern New Hampshire University.  

Stonehill (14-11, 10-3 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow as they host Southern Connecticut State University for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. Saint Michael's (3-20, 2-11 NE-10) will travel to Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
