Skyhawks fall to Yellow Jackets, 3-0, and Panthers, 5-3
MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 7, 2016) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped two games today, getting blanked by fellow Northeast-10 foe American International College, 3-0, before falling to host Florida Institute of Technology at Nancy Bottge Field, 5-3.
Seniors Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) and Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) led the Skyhawks at the plate, with Sumski going 3-for-6 with two doubles and Ropiak finishing 2-for-5 over the two games. Junior Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) added a homerun and three RBI, while senior Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) finished with two hits.
American International 3, Stonehill 0
AIC was led by junior outfielder Keymell Cartwright (Johnstown, Ohio/Johnstown), who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI. Freshman Kaley Kempf (Oxford, Connecticut/Oxford) posted a 2-for-3 effort with a double, while senior Jenna Costa (Turners Falls, Massachusetts/Turners Falls) recorded two hits and classmate Lyndsey Letourneau (Paxton, Massachusetts/Wachusett Regional) drove in one run and scored a run.
Junior Alyssa Camargo (Covina, California/St. Lucy's Priory) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets with a complete game shutout performance, striking out seven batters and allowing eight hits.
After both team were deadlocked at zero for the first five innings, Cartwright opened the scoring with a two run double, scoring Letourneau and freshman Ashley Hughes (Rancho Palos Verdes, California/Palo Verdes Peninsula). The double would prove to be the difference in the contest, as Stonehill failed to drive in any of their baserunners.
Freshman Kayla Riley (Haverhill, Massachusetts/Whittier Regional Vocational Tech) singled in the seventh and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs Letourneau capped the scoring, hitting a RBI single up the middle. Stonehill put a runner on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to advance past second.

Sumski and Squeri paced Stonehill's offense, as Sumski went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and a run; while Squeri hit a three-run homerun and Ruonavaara drew a walk and scored a run.
Ropiak got the start in the circle for Stonehill and took the loss, lasting three innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits and four walks. Squeri took over in the fourth and pitched three innings giving up one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Junior Rachel Pence (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) started for Florida Tech and picked up her 15th win of the season, pitching a complete game with three earned runs on seven hits.
Freshman Alexus Smith (Palm Bay, Florida/Bayside) and senior Elaine Brown (Covina, California/Walnut) recorded three hits each for the Panthers, while Smith reached base all four times, registering two RBI, two runs and a stolen base.
Florida Tech scored at least one run in the first four innings of the game and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Nicole Shinsky (Deltona, Florida/Deltona) hit a RBI single up the middle. The Panthers scored twice more in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single by Smith. They tallied one more run in both the third and fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Stonehill rallied in the sixth inning when junior Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) singled to third base but was called out when Ruonavaara hit into a fielder's choice. Sumski followed that up with a double to left center field to place runners on second and third base with two outs. Squeri then stepped to the plate and jacked a three-run homerun to left center to bring the score to 5-3. Stonehill was unable to produce any more runs in the seventh, handing them their second loss of the day.
Stonehill (1-5, 0-0 NE-10) is off tomorrow before looking to bounce back on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley and Northern State University. The first game is scheduled for 9 a.m., with the second to follow at 11 a.m.
