Stonehill Drops Two At Assumption


Junior Cayleigh McCarthy went 4-for-7 with a triple, two home runs and five RBI today, but Stonehill lost both ends of its doubleheader at Assumption.

Skyhawks fall to Greyhounds by scores of 5-3 and 18-10

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 2, 2015) – The Stonehill College softball team opened Northeast-10 Conference play this afternoon with a doubleheader against Assumption College on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, dropping both games by scores of 5-3 and 18-10.

Playing for the first time March 15th due to numerous postponements and cancellations, the Skyhawks recorded 19 hits over the two games, but Assumption piled up 29 on its way to a sweep.  

Stonehill was led by junior Cayleigh McCarthy (Norfolk, Massachusetts/King Phillip), who went 4-for-7 at the plate with a triple, two home runs and five RBI. Classmate Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) also posted a 4-for-7 effort with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs, while sophomore Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) went 3-for-6 with a walk, a double and three RBI.

Junior Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Massachusetts/Fairhaven) paced the Assumption offense, as she went 5-for-8 out of the leadoff spot with three RBI and five runs. Senior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, Rhode Island/LaSalle Academy) also went 5-for-8 at the plate and drove in four runs, while classmate Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Massachusetts/Holy Name) added three hits and two RBI.

Assumption 5, Stonehill 3

Junior Jess Underwood (Hudson, New Hampshire/Alvirne) got the start for the Greyhounds in the opener and earned the win after lasting all seven innings and giving up three runs on four hits while striking out six.   

After two scoreless frames, Assumption jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Moniz, Impagliazzo, and DiPilato. Stonehill answered with a run in the top of the fifth, as McCarthy homered to left field, but the Greyhounds tacked on two more in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.

McCarthy brought the Skyhawks back to within two runs in the seventh with her second homer of the game, a two-run shot, but Assumption held on for the win.

Assumption 18, Stonehill 10

After combining for eight runs on 12 hits in the opener, the two teams slugged out 28 runs on 36 hits in game two. Sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, New Hampshire/Bedford) led the offensive outburst for the Greyhounds, as she went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI.  

Stonehill opened the scoring in the top of the first, plating a pair of runs on RBI hits by Squeri and McCarthy. Assumption answered with four in the bottom half of the inning however, the first of its four multi-run frames. Impagliazzo got it started with an RBI single up the middle, and two batters later Abad belted a three-run homer to left field.

The Greyhounds broke the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring seven times on six hits and an error, before adding two more runs in the fourth to go up 13-3.

Stonehill would make the game interesting, scoring three times in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull to within three, but Assumption plated five runs in the sixth to end the contest.

Stonehill (6-8, 0-2 NE-10) will look to bounce back on Tuesday afternoon at Bentley University, while Assumption (10-4, 2-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday at Southern New Hampshire University.
