Skyhawks fall to Marauders, 10-4, before shutting out Mavericks, 8-0
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 9, 2015) – The Stonehill College softball team returned to action today at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, splitting a pair of games with Millersville University and Mercy College. Stonehill fell to Millersville in the opener, 10-4, before posting an 8-0 shutout of Mercy in the second contest.
Sophomore third baseman Jacklyn Oleksak (Massapequa, New York/Plainedge) led the Skyhawks offensively, going 5-for-7 with a double and three RBI. Classmate Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) and junior Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) each recorded three hits, one RBI, and one run scored, while sophomore Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) chipped in with one hit, one RBI, two walks, and three runs.
Junior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) got the start for Stonehill against Mercy and turned in her second impressive performance in two days, as she tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out three batters and allowing just five hits in the process. Ropiak also contributed at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Millersville 10, Stonehill 4
Led by senior second baseman Danielle DiFilippo (Hatboro, Pennsylvania/Hatboro-Horsham), Millersville racked up 15 hits and ten runs while holding the Skyhawks to four runs in the opener.
DiFilippo went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while classmate Gabbie Berry (Norristown, Pennsylvania/Norristown Area) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Maria Spinosa (Horsham, Pennsylvania/Hatboro-Horsham) added two hits and two runs. Junior Brianna Andraos (Malvern, Pennsylvania/West Chester East) got the start in the circle and went all seven innings, striking out two and walking four.
Carbone and Oleksak each went 3-for-3 for the Skyhawks, while Sumski recorded one hit and drew two walks. Squeri took the loss after giving up five earned runs on eight hits through 3.1 frames of work.
Millersville opened the scoring in the third with a pair of runs on RBI singles by Berry and sophomore Heather Lutz (Horsham, Pennsylvania/Hatboro-Horsham), but Stonehill tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single by Oleksak.
The Marauders bats stayed hot the following frame, as they put four more runs on the board to take a 6-2 lead. Carbone and Squeri kept the Skyhawks in the game, as they each recorded RBI hits in the bottom of the fourth, but that would be as close as Stonehill would get. Millersville added another run in the fifth, before scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Stonehill 8, Mercy 0
Ropiak, who earned the win in Stonehill's season opener yesterday with a complete game effort, was the key again today against Mercy, as she went the distance without allowing a run. Ropiak also went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, while Oleksak and Sumski recorded two hits and one RBI each.
Freshman Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Connecticut/East Lyme) accounted for two of Mercy's five hits as the Mavericks dropped to 0-6 this season.
After four scoreless frames, the Skyhawks finally broke through for the game's first run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Sumski. Ropiak helped her own cause with a two-run double the next inning as Stonehill took a 3-0 lead, and four Skyhawks recorded RBI singles in a five-run seventh to cap the scoring.
Stonehill (2-2, 0-0 NE-10) will be off tomorrow before returning to action on Wednesday with games against Queens College (9 a.m.) and Limestone College (11 a.m.).
