Skyhawks come from behind to take opener, 4-2, before falling 5-0 in second game

EASTON, Mass. (April 5, 2014) – The Stonehill College softball team split its doubleheader today against Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference action at Gartland Field. Stonehill extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-2 win in the opener, before dropping the second contest by a 5-0 final.

Senior Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) led Stonehill's offensive attack, as she went 3-for-6 at the plate, while classmate Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) clubbed the game-winning home run in the opener, a two-run shot to left field. Freshman Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) also hit a home run in the opener, her team-leading fourth of the season.

Sophomore Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) improved her record to 3-5 with a win in game one, as she went the distance for the sixth time this season, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two.

Le Moyne was led by sophomores Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) and Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). Trotta went 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBI on the afternoon, while Reynolds was also 2-for-6 to go with a run and one RBI.

Freshman Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) earned the win for the Dolphins with an impressive outing in game two, as she pitched a complete game three-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks.

Stonehill 4, Le Moyne 2

Stonehill came from behind to defeat Le Moyne in today's opener despite being out-hit 6-4. Morrell, McKillop, Squeri and freshman Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) recorded hits for the Skyhawks, and Ruonavaara held the Dolphins to two runs on six hits.

Le Moyne wasted no time in getting on the board, as the Dolphins jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run shot by freshman Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) that narrowly cleared the center field fence. Although Ruonavaara would give up four more hits over the course of the contest, Le Moyne did not score again.

Carbone led off the third for the Skyhawks with a double to center, before eventually scoring on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug). Stonehill tied the game the following inning on Squeri's home run to right center, and neither team scored in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Megan Ruonavaara earned the win in game one after going all seven innings and allowing just two runs on six hits.

With one out in the sixth, Morrell beat out an infield single to Le Moyne's shortstop. After the next batter struck out, McKillop delivered a two-out, two-run, go-ahead home run over the left field fence that gave the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead. Ruonavaara allowed a single in the top of the seventh, but retired the side without allowing any runs to score as Stonehill won its fifth consecutive game.

Le Moyne 5, Stonehill 0

Claflin powered the Dolphins to a win in game two and the doubleheader split by allowing just three hits and no runs, while Le Moyne scored five times on five hits.

For the second consecutive game, the Dolphins took a 2-0 first inning lead with the help of a home run. After Claflin sandwiched a single between a pair of strikeouts, Trotta homered to right center to stake Le Moyne to an early lead.

The Dolphins doubled their advantage one inning later, as Reynolds recorded an RBI double and eventually came around to score on a passed ball. Le Moyne added one more run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Riley, and Claflin held the Skyhawks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.

Stonehill (10-12, 5-3 NE-10) will be right back at it tomorrow, as the Skyhawks are scheduled to host Saint Rose for their second consecutive doubleheader against a Northeast-10 Southwest Division foe. Le Moyne (11-9, 4-2 NE-10) will also be in action tomorrow with a twinbill at Bentley University.
