Stonehill Splits Doubleheader at Saint Rose


Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox was a combined 3-for-5 with three walks, a double ans two RBI over the two games this afternoon, extending her team-best hitting streak to 12 games. 

Skyhawks postseason hopes dashed with game one defeat, bounce back with nine-run sixth to fuel game two win

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 30, 2011) – Stonehill College saw its hopes of a second-straight postseason appearance dashed with its doubleheader split at The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Cathy Cummings Haker Field this afternoon. Saint Rose posted a 5-3 win in game one, before Stonehill responded with a 10-5 victory in game two.

Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) continues to swing a hot bat for Stonehill as she went a combined 3-for-5 with three walks, a double, two RBI and a run scored over the course of the afternoon, extending her team season-high hitting streak to 12 games. Senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) batted 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) hit 3-for-7 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Sophomore Rachel Reed (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) paced Saint Rose by hitting a combined 4-for-7 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Amber Loussedes (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) was 4-for-8 on the afternoon.

Saint Rose 5, Stonehill 3

Saint Rose erased an early one run deficit and withstood a late Stonehill rally to claim a 5-3 victory in game one.

Rachel Reed paced the Saint Rose offense as she hit 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Amber Loussedes was 4-for-4, while junior Kayla Kuilema (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) batted 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Nicole Traylor (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) picked up the win (5-8) in the circle, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with a strikeout and a walk over seven innings.

Courtney Marchand led Stonehill as she hit 2-for-3 with a double and run scored. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) batted 1-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) chipped in with a pinch-hit two run double.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) took the loss (3-5), allowing three unearned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks over 3.1 innings.

Stonehill struck first with a run in the third as Marchand doubled to center with one out and scored when sophomore Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) reached on an error. Saint Rose answered with three in the fourth by taking advantage of two Stonehill errors. Reed had an RBI single, with a second run scoring on the play due to an error. Senior Ashley Fryer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) drove in the third run when she reached on a fielder's choice.

Saint Rose added two valuable insurance runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Kuilema and Reed. Stonehill mounted a comeback in the sixth as it loaded the bases with one out before McKillop delivered a pinch-hit two run double down the leftfield line. However, Traylor rebounded and retired the next two batters to escape the jam.

Stonehill 10, Saint Rose 5

Stonehill used a nine run sixth inning to fuel its 10-5 victory over Saint Rose in game two and earn a split in the doubleheader.

Ashley Langlois paced the Stonehill offense as she hit 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kelsey Wilcox went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBI. Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) batted 2-for-5 with a double, run scored and two RBI. Chelsea Stryker was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) finished 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Eisenmann also collected the win (1-0) in relief for Stonehill, allowing two earned runs on three hits in two thirds of an inning. Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) started in the circle for the Skyhawks, yielding three earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks over 4.1 innings. Classmate Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) closed the game out with two scoreless innings of work, allowing just a hit with three strikeouts.

Freshman Olivia Reeves (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) hit 2-for-2 for Saint Rose with a double. Kayla Kuilema batted 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored, while sophomore Steph Luce (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Freshman Mikayla Wells (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) took the loss (2-9) in relief for the Golden Knights, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in an inning and a third. Junior Sarah Arbogast (Newark, N.Y./Newark) started and yielded just a hit with a strikeout and five walks in four scoreless innings.

Saint Rose opened a 5-1 lead after five innings, opening the scoring with a run in the fourth on an RBI single to right center by Luce. After Stonehill tied the score in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to right center by Abarr, the Golden Knights scored four in the fifth. Nicole Traylor put Saint Rose back in front with an RBI single, before scoring on a double to right center by junior Jessica Butterbrodt (Conesus, N.Y./Livonia). Rachel Reed followed with an RBI double before scoring on a single up the middle by junior Lindsey David (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai).

Stonehill sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on eight hits, with a Saint Rose error mixed in, to mount its winning rally in the sixth. Freshman Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) led off with a single and scored on a double to center by Eisenmann. The Skyhawks went on to load the bases before Abarr delivered an RBI single to center. Wilcox smacked a two-run double down the leftfield line with one out and then McKillop put Stonehill in front with a sacrifice fly. Wilcox and sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored when Eisenmann reached on an error on what should have been the final out of the frame and then Courtney Marchand and Langlois added RBI singles.  

Stonehill (18-26, 14-14 NE-10) closes out its season on Sunday when it visits Le Moyne College for an NE-10 doubleheader at noon. Saint Rose (8-27-1, 4-20-1 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Sunday for its season finale at noon.
