Pace Hands Stonehill Sweep

Garcia's three-run homer lifts Pace to 7-6 win in game two

EASTON, Mass. (April 25, 2011) – Pace University swept a doubleheader from Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Field this afternoon. Pace opened with a 7-3 win in game one, before rallying for a 7-5 triumph in game two.

Junior Lauren Bell (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) led the Pace offense as she went a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Nicole Pellegrino (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) was 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBI for the afternoon.

Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led Stonehill by hitting a combined 4-for-8 with an RBI, stolen base and run scored. Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) hit 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Pace used a four-run fourth to fuel a 7-3 win over Stonehill in game one.

Lauren Bell was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for Pace, while Nicole Pellegrino hit 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, Calif./George Washington) batted 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored for the Setters. Classmate Rachel McMahon (Corona, Calif./Esperanza) went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore Chelsea Shea (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) earned the win (8-7), allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.

Sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) hit 1-for-3 with two RBI for Stonehill. Kelsey Wilcox was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and run scored, while senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) and freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) both finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) took the loss (6-5), allowing five runs, all unearned, on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk over six innings.


Sophomore Kaitlin Miller drove in two runs in game one. 

Pace got all the scoring it would need with its four-run fourth. The Setters opened the scoring when Bell singled and scored on a ground out by senior Sarah Meleney (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery). Pellegrino followed with her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to cap the inning. The Setters extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth as freshman Samantha Garcia (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) reached on an error and then scored when Shea also reached on an error.

Stonehill rallied with three in the home half of the sixth with Wilcox following up back-to-back one out singles by Swider and Abarr with an RBI double. Miller drove in two with a single. Pace regained a four-run cushion in the seventh on RBI singles from McMahon and Bell.

Samantha Garcia smacked a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to rally Pace to a 7-6 win over Stonehill in game two.

Lauren Bell hit 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap for Pace. Garcia finished 1-for-3 with the homer and three RBI, while Chelsea Shea batted 1-for-4 with two RBI. Rachel McMahon chipped in by going 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) earned the win (4-5) in the circle for the Setters, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Sophomore Colby Hochmuth (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg) earned her first save of the year with a scoreless seventh, working around a hit and error with a strikeout.

Chelsea Stryker led Stonehill as she hit 3-for-4 with a stolen base, run scored and RBI. Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss (1-7), allowing seven runs, just three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 6.2 innings.

Pace took the early advantage with a four run first as Bell and Shea both collected two-run singles. Stonehill got a run back in the home half as Stryker led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and then scored all the way from second on a wild pitch.

Stonehill added a run in the fifth as McKillop led off with a single and scored on a single by Stryker. The Skyhawks took their first lead in the sixth when Kelsey Wilcox and freshman Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) walked before McKillop belted her third home run of the season.

Pace regained the lead in the seventh as McMahon walked and Bell reached on error on what should have been the game ending out before Garcia delivered a three-run homer with two out for the deciding runs.

Stonehill (15-23, 11-11 NE-10) is right back in action on Tuesday when it visits Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Thursday to host Adelphi University for doubleheader at 3 p.m. Pace (19-22, 11-14 NE-10) travels to Mercy College for a non-conference set on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
