Stonehill Splits with New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 15, 2011) – Stonehill College collected a doubleheader split with the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at UNH Softball Field this afternoon. Stonehill snapped a four game skein with a 4-3 win in game one, before New Haven held on for a 3-2 win in game two.

Sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) hit a combined 3-for-7 with a double and four RBI to lead Stonehill on the afternoon. Classmate Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) was 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored, while freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) batted 3-for-6 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) paced New Haven as she hit 4-for-6 with a double, run scored and two RBI. Classmate Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) batted 3-for-8 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored.

Stonehill 4, New Haven 3

Kaitlin Miller delivered a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning and held off a New Haven rally in the bottom of the frame to collect a 4-3 win in game one, snapping a string of four straight losses.

Miller finished 1-for-3 with the double and two RBI. Christina Swider went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Casey Remick hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) earned the win (5-4) for Stonehill as she allowed three runs, just one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk over seven innings.

Christina Gelardi hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to lead New Haven. Senior Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and runs scored.

Sophomore Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) took the loss for the Chargers (8-5), allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.


Junior Kaitlin Andrews tossed a complete game win in the circle in game one. 

New Haven loaded the bases, but came away with just one run, to open the scoring in the first. The first three batters reached with a pair of infield singles and a walk, but Andrews got two-straight ground balls back to the circle to cut down two of those base runners at the plate, before Gelardi, who walked, scored on a wild pitch.

Stonehill scored twice to take its first lead in the third. Swider and Stryker singled to open the inning before senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) singled to right center and advanced to second on an error that also allowed Stryker to score with one out. New Haven knotted the score in the bottom of the frame when Harold led off and reached on an error and later scored on a bunt single from Gelardi.

The game remained tied until the seventh when Remick and Swider led off with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Miller followed two batters later with a two-run double to left with one out. New Haven attempted a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh as Harold reached on an error, stole second and scored when freshman Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) reached on an error. Andrews recovered and got a groundout to end the game.

New Haven 3, Stonehill 2

Sophomore Casey Remick finished the day with three hits, including a double, and two runs scored.

New Haven scored all three runs over its first two at bats and held on late for a 3-2 victory in game two to earn the split.

Chelsea Harold batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base, run scored and two RBI, while Christina Gelardi hit 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Junior Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored.

Junior Micah Stonesifer (Wichita Falls, Texas/Archer City) picked up the win in the circle (9-7), allowing two runs, just one earned, on eight hits with ten strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.

Kaitlin Miller hit 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead Stonehill. Casey Remick and Chelsea Stryker both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss (1-5), allowing three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks over two innings. Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) chipped in with four innings of five-hit shutout relief, striking out two and walking one to give the Skyhawks a chance for a comeback.

New Haven opened a 3-0 lead after two innings of play, starting with a single run in the first as Harold led off with a single through the left side, stole second and scored on a one-out infield single by Gelardi. The Chargers added two more in the second when Angehr and Lucy Francisco singled after Krantz retired the first two batters and scored on a single through the left side by Harold.

Remick sparked Stonehill's seventh inning rally with a leadoff double. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored, along with Stryker (single), on a single to center from Miller. Miller advance to third on the play thanks to a New Haven error, but could not score the tying run as Stonesifer recovered to strikeout the final two batters and seal the win.

 

Stonehill (11-19, 7-7 NE-10) is right back in action on Saturday when it visits Southern Connecticut State University for a Northeast-10 doubleheader at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Monday to host rival Bentley University for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. New Haven (19-12, 9-7 NE-10) hosts Bentley University tomorrow at noon.
