Stonehill Splits at Franklin Pierce

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (April 6, 2011) – Stonehill College split a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at the Leominster Lassie League Field complex this afternoon. The Skyhawks opened with a 5-1 victory in game one, before the Ravens bounced back with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) paced Stonehill's offense as she finished a combined 3-for-7 with a home run. Classmate Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) batted 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Jessica Furtado (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) led Franklin Pierce by hitting a combined 2-for-5 with a walk and run scored. Junior Rachel Baxter (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) batted 2-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored.

Stonehill 5, Franklin Pierce 1

Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) tossed a two-hitter to lead Stonehill to a 5-1 victory over Franklin Pierce in game one.

Andrews earned her third win (3-3) of the season, allowing an earned run on just two hits with five strikeouts and a walk in the complete game effort. She also helped her own cause at the plate by hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Kelsey Wilcox batted 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBI, while Nicole Eisenmann finished 2-for-4. Senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Rachel Baxter batted 1-for-3 with a stolen base and RBI for Franklin Pierce. Jessica Furtado hit 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Jessica Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y./Thousand Islands) took the loss (1-6) in the circle for Franklin Pierce, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk over seven innings.

Franklin Pierce struck first, scoring its lone run in the second as Furtado led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and then scored on a single to left by Baxter. Stonehill knotted the score in the fourth when freshman Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) drew a two out walk and scored on a double to left by Wilcox.


Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann had three hits on the day, belting her third home run of the season in game two.

Stonehill took the lead in the fifth as freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) reached on an error that allowed her to circle the bases. The Skyhawks broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Wilcox added another RBI double and then scored on a double to center by Langlois. Andrews followed with an RBI single through the left side that drove in sophomore Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton), who reached on an error.

Andrews did the rest, retiring 17 of the last 18 batters, including the last seven as she didn't allow a hit over the final five innings.

Franklin Pierce 3, Stonehill 1

Franklin Pierce used a three-run fourth inning to collect a 3-1 victory in game two to earn a split of the doubleheader.

Senior Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) pitched Franklin Pierce to the win (2-5), allowing the one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk over seven innings.

Rachel Baxter was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored, while Furtado finished 1-for-2. Junior Jayme Bilafer (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) chipped in by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Nicole Eisenmann hit 1-for-3 with a home run for Stonehill, while senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) batted 2-for-3 with a double. Ashley Langlois went 1-for-3 for the Skyhawks.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) took the loss (2-2), allowing three runs, just one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over five-plus innings. Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) retired all three batters she faced in the sixth with two strikeouts.

Franklin Pierce scored all three of its runs in the fourth as Bilafer led off with a single and later scored on a Baxter single, which also scored sophomore Alexa Demsey (Maidstone, Vt./Groveton) who pinch ran for Furtado after she walked. Baxter scored the third run when she scored on a wild pitch.

Eisenmann put Stonehill on the board when she belted her third home run of the season to left with one out in the sixth.

Stonehill (8-14, 4-2 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Saint Michael's College for a makeup of last Saturday's postponed doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Franklin Pierce (3-11, 1-1 NE-10) visits Saint Anselm College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
