Stonehill Earns Split with Southern New Hampshire


Freshman Christina Swider was a combined 3-for-5 with a double and RBI, going 3-for-3 in the Skyhawks game two win.

EASTON, Mass. (April 3, 2011) – Stonehill College earned a doubleheader split with Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Field this afternoon. Southern New Hampshire held on for a 3-2 victory in game one, before senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) delivered a walk off RBI double to lift Stonehill to a 5-4 win in game two.

Freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) was a combined 3-for-5 with a walk, double and RBI for Stonehill. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished 3-for-6 with a pair of walks, a double, stolen base and three RBI for the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass./Abington) led Southern New Hampshire as she hit a combined 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, home run and RBI. Senior Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc./Westosha Central) went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks, a run scored, home run and three RBI.

Southern New Hampshire 3, Stonehill 2

Southern New Hampshire scored all its runs in the first inning on back-to-back home runs and held off a late Stonehill rally to claim a 3-2 victory in game one.

Kelsea Cheney went 2-for-2 with a walk, double, home run, RBI and run scored for Southern New Hampshire, while sophomore Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) batted 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Regional) hit 1-for-3.

Senior Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) picked up the win (3-3), allowing two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in the complete game effort.

Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) provided the offense for Stonehill as she batted 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs. Chelsea Stryker also hit 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) chipped in with a pinch hit double.

Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss (1-4), surrendering three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks over her seven innings. She settled down after a rocky first inning to scatter two hits and three walks over the final 6.2 innings after giving up back-to-back homers in the top of the first, retiring ten of the last 11 batters she faced, holding the Penmen hitless over the final 3.2 frames.


Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox smacked two home runs in game one, giving her a team-best eight this year. 

SNHU scored all three runs in the top of the first as junior Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H./Franklin) drew a one-out walk before Jenkins belted her first home run of the season to right center. Cheney followed with her first homer of the season to left center before Krantz settled in and retired the side.

Stonehill got a run back in the second as Wilcox smacked a one out homer to right center. She sparked the Skyhawks' seventh inning rally with her team-best eighth home run of the season with one out, again to right center. Stonehill would load the bases as Miller followed with a pinch hit double, and freshman Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was hit by a pitch before Stryker drew a two out walk. Griffin was able to escape the jam by getting the final out on a groundball to first.

Katy Abarr drove in the winning run with a two out RBI double to left center to lift Stonehill to a 5-4 victory in game two.


Senior Katy Abarr gave the Skyhawks a walkoff win in game two with an RBI double. 

Abarr finished 1-for-2 with the double, RBI and run scored, while Christina Swider batted 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Chelsea Stryker hit 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) chipped in by going 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) earned the win (2-3) in the circle for Stonehill, allowing just a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) started for the Skyhawks and yielded four runs, three earned, on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings.

Elena Anderson paced SNHU as she hit 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Amanda Barton finished 2-for-4 for the Penmen, while Kelsey Griffin batted 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Freshman Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) took the loss (2-3) in a complete game effort, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

SNHU again scored three in the top of the first as Cristy Jenkins reached on a fielder's choice and Kelsea Cheney singled ahead of Anderson who belted her first home run of the season to left center with two out.

Stonehill broke through with four in the fourth to take its first lead of the afternoon. Abarr walked and Langlois singled before Swider reached on an infield single that scored Abarr from third. Angela Moskwa was hit by a pitch in her second pinch-hitting appearance of the day to load the bases before Stryker cleared them with her two out double to left center.

SNHU tied the score in the sixth with an RBI single from Griffin to chase McKillop. Andrews came on and got a lineout to end the threat. Stryker led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk for Stonehill, was sacrificed to second and then scored the winning run on Abarr's double with two out.

Stonehill (7-13, 3-1 NE-10) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when it visits Franklin Pierce University for an NE-10 doubleheader at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to return home next Saturday to host American International College at 12:30 p.m. Southern N.H. (5-13, 3-1 NE-10) hosts the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
